Pulley wrenchs

Does anyone here use the '65 thru '74 alternator generator pulley wrench (uses two perpendicular pins to engage the fan)instead of the '75 thru '89 pulley wrench (standard pin spanner) on alternators after 1985? I have an '88 3.2 litre and I really don't like my pulley wrench. Does the older tool work as well if not better? I can see that maybe the newer alternator can not accept the older tool? If anyone has experience using the older wrench on newer engines, that info would help alot!

Thank you very much.

I bougt an older one by mistake for my 84 Carerra. It did not fit. Had to order the new one. Try PB blaster on the pully nut. It makes a HUGE difference.

Any one need a like-new older pully wrench?

Thanks ausg. Its not the case that I can't get the pully nut off. This is my third time replacing the belt on this engine and I'm always looking for a better tool or a better way of doing things. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on a better tool.

Thanks for the reply and Happy Holidays.

You could make a better tool -- a more precise locating pin, maybe a bit longer -- and a clamping part to hold it in no matter what - that could be hinged to the side that has the pin in it and shaped symetrically.

Not worth the effort to most of us - but one thing we have all learned from looking at various projects: something is always worth the effort to somebody here.
