930 tensioners into a '71 2.2
Can anyone confirm whether 930 type tensioners will bolt right in to replace early style tensioners in a 2.2?
Not sure if spacers, etc. are needed. Thanks and Happy Holidays! |

i assume you mean carrera , hydraulic tensioners ? it's a common upgrade
you'll need new chain covers , new oil lines Pelican Parts sells all this as a kit , has everything in it you need to do the upgrade , check the technical article : http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_carrera_chain_tensioners/911_carrera_chain_tensioners2.htm

930 tensioners
I thought the 930 tensioners were made PRIOR to the oil-fed Carrera types; mid to late '70's.
I think they are a straight replacement are are of slightly better design from the early ones, but still mechanical. Am I correct? Thanks. |

in that case, dunno , i know the first 930's didn't have the hydraulic tensioners , but dunno if they're much better, or if they are bolt on replacement, i would guess so , ( if hydraulic ones fit ,then i don't think the 930's would be different in size )...

Alex,
Yes, around 1980 - 81 the standard tensioners prior to the oil-fed Carrera tensions started to be called 'Turbo' or '930' tensioners, though the same exact tensioners were used in both SC and Turbo engines! Yes, those '930' tensioners will bolt up perfectly in a 2.2 engine, but you really, really, REALLY need to fit the double-bushing chain-wheel carriers [idler arms] at the same time rather than use the aluminum 10 mm spacers that are available!!! The 1980.5 updated production [aka '930' or 'Turbo'] tensioners are 10.0 mm 'thinner' where they fit over the 'spud' ... because the updated idler arms were/are wider/thicker to accommodate two bronze bushings, and using the commonly available spacers is an extremely bad idea! It is now widely believed that the double -bushing idler arms actually cured the failure problems that were happening with the earlier, 'mid-year' design tensioners because of binding of the first-generation idler arms causing the tensioners to fail.

You are the "man" Early S Man!
I will need to look for the updated idler arms - same as the Carrera types?? Thanks again, Alex |

Alex,
Yes, the 3.2 Carrera engines used the same double-bushing idler arms carried over from SC production!
