Will using my heater cause rust?!?

A fellow 911 owner here at work just told me that frequent use of the heater in early 911's will cause rust in the rocker panels even without the presence of catalysts such as salt or external moisture. He says that mere condensation that occurs during heater use is enough to bring the rust.

How much truth is there to this claim?

I enjoy driving my 70T in cold temperatures, right up until the snow begins to fly.....I'd hate to think that just using my heater is inviting the dreaded rust!!!

Isn't it just the opposite?

If you use your heater, then hot, dry air is coursing through all the "tubes" that make up your heating system. That should have the effect of drying out any air that's in those tubes, thus avoiding rust.

However, when all that warm air cools down, then condensation "might" occur.

We've had out 911SC for 23 years now, and no rust has formed. We've lived in Washington DC, Orlando, Glendale CA, Columbus OH, and Palm Beach Gardens, and have used the heater in all of those locations. Still no rust.

Just drive the car!!!!!!

Thanks, Andras.....but remember, your SC has one thing going for it that my T does not: GALVANIZATION

Didn't someone post something about using the heater may cause Parkinson's Disease. Sad part is I don't know what would be worse, rust in the heater channels or getting Parkinson's. Guess I should get rid off my heat exchangers!!!

Yeah, I read that post about the Parkinson's.....I'm more worried about the rust LOL!!

Its like startiig a car (any car) and repeatedly not warming it up. You get condensation which doesn't get driven out and dried up. That's a main reason that mild steel mufflers rot.

Parkinsons? Whaaaa?

Andras Nagy 12-24-2004 03:20 AM

Guys, I'm not a doctor, but isn't Parkinson's the "trembling" disease, such a what the Pope and Janet Reno have? Parkinson's has nothing to do with memory loss. It has to do with trembling hands and perhaps limbs.

But your joke is amusing nevertheless. We worry far too much about the little things.

cstreit....here's the thread everyone is referring to:

But we digress!!

Seriously, what about the rust???????? I KNOW there must be some more opinions on this matter......
