CV Joint Lifespan?....
About 4 years ago (when I first got my SC) I replaced the right axle with a rebuilt unit. After about 30,000 miles the inner CV joint started creaking, cracking and making other nasty noises. I pulled the axle, replaced the inner joint, cleaned and repacked the outer joint and now all is quiet. Is cv joint failure after only 30K unusual or did I just happen to get a pooly manufactured part?

As I recall, mine lasted closer to 100,000 miles, but many things on mine have lasted for an incredibly long time.

no substitute? Are you talking about original or replacements that lasted 100,000 miles? I think the originals are superior to the replacements but that is just my opinion. 30,000 seems way to short but if they somehow loose the grease their time has got to be shortened.

Depends on the dufus that did the rebuild.....

Good point Mike, my bad. I'm speaking of the originals that lasted so long. I suppose it would be worthwhile to buy OEM non rebuilt replacements over rebuilds, given the longevity.

The new Lobro's aren't the same as the originals either. I kept my originals when I bought the Lobros after emailing J. Walker about "why are the bolts hitting?" He told me he always rebuilds the old ones because if for no other reason to keep things original.
A year and a half later the original axles are still sitting on the floor in my garage. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh... the life of a divorced slob.... Someday I'll rebuild the originals and get them off the floor. |
