Shift knob cap

After searching and reading bentley, I still don't know how to "gently pry off" the shift knob cap without destroying it. I just got a new stock shift knob and want to install it.
What should I pry the knob cap off with? Seems a small screwdriver would destroy the cap. On the 87s we need to remove the cap to access the allen screw.
Thanks. (and Merry Christmas!)

$80 for a shift knob - and you didn't spring for the extra $3 for a sparkling brand new cap?!?

I used a narrow X-ACTO blade. Got the cap off without damage. there is a "gasket" between th knob and the cap. that got kind of messed up, but still usable. You are definitely better off buying a new cap.

Ya. I kinda blew it on that part. Might end up buying a new cap. I'll try racerdoc911's X-ACTO blade method first. Let's hope I don't spear my hand.
Thanks guys.

The cap has a pretty wide edge under it, too wide to go to the bottom on the first try. You have to work around it, a little at a time. You're more likely to damage the shift know than the cap by prying against it.

Yup, that' exactly what happened, the old knob is history now. But since I was installing a new shift knob anyway, no prob. The old cap is a little gouged now but I ordered a new cap yesterday. So as soon as fed ex gets here, I'll be all done.
Thanks to all.

BTW, Since I decided to toss the old cap, I ended up using a butter knife and then a small screwdriver to remove the cap. Not recommended if you intend to re-use the old cap or knob.
