911SC modified-Your thoughts $$$
 

Have a chance to purchase non running 1979 911 SC that the body has been modified to resemble 930. Car was running about 3 months ago. Engine is blown. All parts are there. May be able to purchase for approx. $3500. Is this reasonable?? Thanks.

Worst case, it looks like a decent parts car candidate.

here is the problem. You buy the car for 3500. Even if it only took 10K to get it sorted, you'll never get your money out of it and you have a dikkens of a time selling it.

By the looks of it, 10K won't cut it. More like 15 or 20K

This car only makes sense if you can put a motor in yourself and paint it yourself, OR, you are in love with the slantnose turbo look.

Looks more like a $2500 car as I am betting the interior needs a rehab,. the 915 will almost certainly be blown like the motor, etc.

See my book, "The Gold-Plated Porsche: How I Spent a Small Fortune on a Used Car." Bought a runner for $10,500, spent another $60,000 turning it into a nice, well-modified, twin-plug 3.4. Not saying you'll need to spend that much to get this one running again, but $10,000 will disappear so fast you won't even know where it's gone.

Good track car? and only if you stick the engine in there yourself... You could easly have 20K in a car that is worth $10K

That looks like it has not been well cared for. The paint and the dead engine will only be the beginning. You could buy a very nice SC for 14K and come out years ahead of this one.

Where are you located? In california you could find a nice under 10K SC and be miles ahead...

If you like the looks of it, make the best deal you can and buy it. Then decide if you will rebuild the stock motor or upgrade (I vote 3.6).

It's not about resale value, it's about having a Porsche that you really like and your not going to be selling in the next few years.

79 rollers are going for less than $3500, you need to be around $2000 to $2500, that's throwing in extras for the slant nose and assuming the interior isn't trashed.

"Ready for restoration." That's a phrase which has always amused me when reading classifieds. I think it means the same as "Needs a lot of work."

Porsche fixer-uppers are pretty much always a very very poor investment, and they would still be a poor investment even if the original car is free.

I'll return the comment made to me on a car I was looking at... $3500???? Only if you find an envelope with $3000 under the seat...

i have $2000 us and i am willing to take on this project. what exactly is blown on the engine. honestly will i need to replace it.and how is the interior. let me know.

My friend is selling his 1980 G.Red SC for $10k. Very Clean. Engine rebuilt (top) last year, new 915 tranny. 130k miles. He just want's to get rid of it. It's been sitting in his garage ever since he bought a 993. He takes it out from time to time just to keep the oil circulating. He's planning on placing an ad on E-bay for the car in a few days. That would be a good car to part-out. I'd give 3K for it to do just that...

Car needs paint: 2-5k
Motor: 4-8k
Tranny: ?, no way to tell w/o it running
Tail Rubber looks dried out: $300 for OEM
Those box rockers rust. Probably throw em away and hope it's not worse underneath.
Is that a rust spot under the passenger wiper? If so you won't like what's hidding under the windshield seal.

I'd pass at 3500, 2-2500 would make me think about it.

I'll take the 930 type vents if you buy it want to part it out :)

Can't tell you it's a good deal due to too many unknowns, interior, transmission, brakes, electrical, rust, quality of work done, etc....If you want a PROJECT, don't care about the $$ and really like the look then buy it. Personaly, I'd walk, no run away, it looks like it could eat up money fast. On the hand you might be able to part it out and make a few dollars but that's a gamble. BTW, was the car broken into or is the driver's window busted?

One piece of advice you see over and over here is to buy the best Porsche you can. If your budget is tight you can get a nice 944 or 914 for that money. A 914 is a blast to drive and gives you plenty of air cooled experience. 944's are fun and the parts are much, much cheaper.

If I were looking for a 911 project car I would be looking for a well cared for but tired car. If you were my friend and asking me I would say be patient and keep looking. Good luck.

Good parts car.....to part out. If the fenders are steel originals they are worth 5-700 to someone that really like the slant nose stuff.
the wheels look like the 80's BBS and are pretty worthless.

You might want to buy it and convert to V8 but I would even advise not to do that either because you will have about 7-8k in a decent conversion but 10k+ in a good conversion and it still will look the same and need paint interior work.....ETC!

If you buy it for 3k or less you may be able to get 5k+ in parts depending on the condition that the rest is in.

If you decide to buy and V8 against my advice, don't by a new kit
buy a used kit and save.

buy it and part it and learn about how these cars are constructed. you will soon learn what to look for on the next one that you really want.

Did you buy the car? I have a 1981 911 sc I was thinking of converting to a slant, I keep going back and forth as I had one before and it was a total nightmare as it was a bad build. Let me know how it all turned out.
