trick to installing new weatherstips on popout windows

I am trying to install new rubbers on the outside frames of my rear pop out windows. I am finding it to be a royal PITA and get nowhere fast. I tuck in one edge - the other side pops out. It get rolling down one area, and the first area I worked comes out. Any tips?

Signed,

Sore fingers and frustrated brain.

silicone spray and patience, 1/8" at a time. start one side in and work the other in with a blunted pocket screwdriver. PITA i agree.

John,

I had always heard that silicone and rubber were no-no's. Perhaps that is rubber treatment products which contain silicone. Anyway, I would imagine that the silicone should be wiped off with a good rubber cleaner and then treated.

Silicone.. applied liberally.

then you can pull on the seal a bit to make it smaller ( the bead gets smaller if you stretch it)... along with a dull screwdriver, and a plastic mallet to pursuade the seal into place. You will have to compress the seal if once its in place, if you stretch it to install. Its a pain, but once you get a systme that works run with it

This can be an easy job. Just fill your bathtub with hot water, stretch the molding around the quarter windows and then let them sit in the tub for about an hour.

With a dulled screwdriver, they pop right on. I fought with my mine for 2 hours before doing this, 30 minutes after coming out of the tub and they were ready to go.

I am not sure if this will work if you have a wife.

Shaun - you should get some type of award. GREAT ADVICE. This needs to posted for others who replace theirs.

After struggling with these suckers for way too long, the hot tub soak trick was a piece of cake. Like you said - about an hour soak, a little working required on verticle piece and the rest just popped right on. RIGHT ON SHAUN! Thanks man.

Glad it worked for you Bob, it's quite a satisfying job, my car was much quieter after install and they look really great too. I love functional-cosmetic projects.

Are you also doing the rear window? A local windshield shop did mine for $50, but I brought them the seal. Highly recommended to complement the sides.

gotta get a tub for the shop.

Ayup Shaun,

New rubbers and plugs all around. I am looking forward to a little less wind noise. The sunroof is a major culprit, but have new weather strips for it too.

I am going to try the suggestion to place nylon tubing down the fronts of the door weatherstips to reduce compaction and noise around the door frame.

Thanks,
Rick/Bob
