different spark plug wires for an 84 3.2?

Why are there different spark plug wires for an 84 Carrera vs. 85-89 Carrera's? I am planning on replacing mine and noticed that there are different sets specifically for the 1984 3.2's...or is it all just a conspiracy??? ;) ?

Any brand recommendations for an 84 since they are different?

I'll probably go with Magnecor unless someone says otherwise...

Clewett Engineering High Performance Ignition Wires - BLACK, 911 3.2 Carrera (1984-89)
CE-9192-20-B $143.80

Clewett Engineering High Performance Ignition Wires - RED, 911 3.2 Carrera (1984-89)
CE-9192-20-R $143.80

They are listed in the 911 Ignition section. According to Richard Clewett, these wires fit the 84 models very nicely.

I have heard of Clewett Engineering. I might have to check those out considering the price. Looks like their wires are the same for all of the Carrera 3.2 years...

Still wondering why the factory and Magnecore are different for 84 only though.

They may just be routed differently around the engine and require slightly different lengths. I can see no reason why you would not be able to use 85 to 89 wires on an 84 and make them work. If you had some kind of a deal for a later set, then go for it.
There is no way they moved the distributor or coil after 1984! Probably just where they're routed and where the keepers go. Make sure the distributor cap is the same for 84 to 89 too....have to be. Nothing changed that drastically.

I've had a hard time getting non-oem plug wires to work. Must just be me. I went back to OEM and they popped right on.

The '84 wires for #4-6 are routed across the back of the shroud - the most direct route from the distributor to the plugs.
The '85 - '89 wires run over the top of the fan housing and then under the AC bracket.

And there it is...thanks!

So that means I DO need to order different wires for the 84 since they are different lengths...

Agreed...one of the first things I did was order Magnecore wires for my '84 after hearing about how great they are. What I quickly found was that the Magnecore connectors can easily be shaken off the coil and the distributor. From about 6" away I could gently wiggle the wire to the coil after snapping it on and get it to pop right off. Waste of money...

With the Beru set close to $300 now I'd probably try the Clewitt...

Yes, but you could easily convert to the other wires with some different clamps that secured the wires over the fan housing. There is no "performance" difference either way.

I had to cheat to get the answer to this one. I recalled the quote right away, but couldn't place it. Knew it was something from the 80's though.

Turns out it's Rowdy Roddy Piper from "They Live" :p

As far as the wires go? The Magnecors are difficult on the coil and dist. cap because air gets trapped under the boot when you push it on. Builds up a tiny bit of pressure and wants to pop off. All you do is lift the edge of the boot after you snap the connector in place. You can hear a little hiss as the air sneaks out.

Also helps to smear a tiny bit of dielectric grease on the insides of the boots to help them slide on the cap easier. Of course, this lets them slide off easier too! So you certainly must release the air if you grease up the boots.

Correct me if I'm wrong. The Clewwitt Engineering set available from our host has the Beru connectors?

KTL 12-29-2004 06:51 AM

Those Clewett plug-ends don't look like Beru's to me

The Beru spark plug connectors are what's supposed to be the trouble with the OEM Porsche wires. The resistors in the connectors go bad.

A new Beru connector is $24. Replace a known bad one and problem solved. If you decided to replace all six? Might as well get a whole new wire set, or rebuild the old set with new wire and terminals.
