Beautiful, what did you use?

masraum 12-29-2004 02:46 PM

Sweet!

Sweet except the fan won't fit anymore...there shouldn't be powdercoat on the very ends of the tips of the blades....they shoulda been masked. It'll rub the housing......test fit and see for yourself. Then carefully *try* to get it off the ends....

Awsome, what did you use. Looks great.

Mine looked the same when it came back from powder coat. It will take a little patience to remove the coating from the ends. I used a new file which helps speed up the removal.

California Proven! ;)

A piece of sandpaper will knock off the coating off the end of the blades in less than 2 minutes.

Wil Ferch 12-31-2004 07:15 AM

My point....coulda told the powder coat place to mask the ends from the outset....saves some later rework.

I have given my car back it's virginity...well some of it.

The fan looks great installed. There wasn't a problem with clearance, but I did sand the inside of the housing quite a bit.

This was simply painted. It wasn't powder coated.

nhromyak 12-31-2004 10:58 AM

Did you use heat paint?

Lorenfb 12-31-2004 11:02 AM

"A piece of sandpaper will knock off the coating off the end of the blades in less than 2 minutes."

This may lead to chipping of the power coating as moisture can now enter between
the power coat and the magnesium (also not good for retaining coatings,
moisture causes expansion - not like aluminum).

It wasn't high temperature paint. I got $20 worth from a local paint and body shop.

Good for you. You wonder what people did before powder coat. Jeez, I have painted so many engine parts, frames, sheet metal and wheels with either spray cans or a gun, that I could never remember.

Every now and then I made a poor choice and gas washed the paint off. But, it all worked out as long as I used Rustoleum, Krylon or VHT (on the hot stuff).

Let's just keep an eye on how well the paint will hold up. The tip speed and local impact of the leading edge of the blades is enormous...and these begin to look rather grody in short order....good luck.

i painted mine recently too. it is holding up pretty well. i have got more time than money, so i take it off next year and do it again. thats why i got a blast cabinet eh?

RazorRacer 01-04-2005 03:20 PM

Generally my revs are above 4K so the fan should stay plenty cool :D

Really, it was just a matter of convenience. I had the paint and access to a painter. He wire brushed the fan nicely and the paint stuck like rock. The tips aren't close to hitting the housing, so all things considered, it should hold up fine. But oh the feeling...it's the little things.
