Fuel pump install success!!!
Before I got to the fuel pump, I installed the Welt. short shifter kit in my buddy's '69E. What took me a good hour of swearing on my SC took me under 10 min. on this car. Live and learn.
Then I got my car on his lift - yes, on his lift. Having been stranded in the middle of nowhere on a very hot day when my Carrera fuel pump died a few years ago, I'm all about preventative maint. now. My SC fuel pump was buzzing and whirring. In super cold weather it was noticeably louder. Anyway, I got a new one and planned the job this time. Having done this job on my Carrera in 95 deg. heat in a parking lot on jack stands, doing this one on a lift was quite a luxury. Drained about 4 gal. from the tank, two of which I ran into a new gas can through a coffee filter to use to flush the tank again after it was empty. Flushed the tank, installed new pump and was very happy. Old pump had a much shorter neck where the banjo fitting went in. I can't figure out how the factory did it, since I had to CUT off the elect. lead studs to spin the pump off the banjop fitting. There was no room for a 17mm wrench to go on there. But the new pump has a 1" longer neck, so it was very easy to spin on and then tighten. My buddy drove me to gas station to get a few gal. in my clean gas can, I poured it into the SC and she fired right up. Car is NOTICEABLY more quiet, so I am very satisfied that I avoided a disaster. It could have lasted another year, or it could have died tomorrow on the way to my best friend's wedding in Pittsburgh. Anyway, call me a hypochondriac, call it LeSchanderitis, whatever; my fuel pump is good to go and I will sleep better tonight.
