Wierd Oil Leak - See Pic

I have a strange oil leak from the area circled on the pic. This is the right rear of my 71T, but my 85 looks the same as the pic. The little ear thing is open on the back side, next to the valve cover, and the oil is coming out of there. This appears to be part of the cam housing.

Any idea where the oil is coming from, or better what needs to be done to stop it. Drips a lot, right on to the exhaust.

I just went thru this with my car...twice! The Camshaft plate seal was leaking on my car and the dripping was exactly where yours is. Not a real fun time to repair. My mechanic [fresh rebuild] did it 3 times..first being when the engine was first assemblied and then twice more. The final time he noticed the coverplate was not completely flat and machined it. So far so good. I feel your pain!

Next time you pull the valve cover, check the rocker arm shafts.

Some folks add the little "O" rings to the shafts (2 per) to prevent leaking.

Also, check the condition of the gasket to ensure that it didn't get crimpted or move out of place when the valve cover was torqued.

Cheers

the coverplate is number 31 in the pic. It seals to the chain housing with an O-ring (nr 30) and to the camshaft housing with a paper gasket (nr 29). To get to this cover plate, first you have to open the chain housing and then you need to take of the chain wheel from the camshaft. This will screw up the camshaft timing which will need to be reset.

The rocker shafts (nr 44) in the pic cannot (easily) be removed with the engine in the car.

I think some more diagnosis on your side is required before resolving this as both remedies provided take imply some serious work

A QUICK UPDATE.

I seem to have fixed the leak. Took off the valve cover so I could get to the back side of the cam housing seal. Cleaned the area thoroughly with brake cleaner, and smeared some hi-temp gasket stuff around the bottom of the seal area. Walla. NO MORE LEAK.

This should hold me for a while, and it was much simpler/cheaper than a proper re-seal.
