70 911T What to look for:

I know this is really short notice and I need some input from you guys. I'm going to be looking at a 1970 911T tomorrow and thought you guys might be able to help me with what to look for, beyond the usual like rust. What I know so far is that the car has 108,000 with a full rebuild a little over three years ago, 5500 miles. The work was performed by a local, well trusted, Porsche mechanic. He's worked on my 77. The owner has had the car since 87 and replaced the webers with new in 88. It's a coupe. Thanks in advance....Clinton

I'd double whatever money you thought you were saving for the first 12months maintenance!

Its like a house renovation, very rarely does anything come in on budget and more than often you want to upgrade along the way.

All cases more $$$$$$$ are required, and there is nothing worse than feeling you cannot afford to fix/upgrade

Happy New Year

I bought a 1970 T with 97K original miles and had little surprises or expenditures besides maintenance over the 3-4 year ownership. Hopefully you wont have to double your money. Adjusting the Zeniths is cheap if you do it yourself :) Not alot of sub-systems to go bad. Check for bad oil leaks, suspension condition, electrical functions, tranny/clutch issues. Good luck!

Rust!

Hey guys, has webers and I know about the rust concerns. What about the 901 trans. know nothing about them.

It should have Carrera chain tensioners.
I have a 901 in the T.
First gear grinds a little. I tried adjusting but most likely the syncro.
Unless you bolt a 3.0 are bigger to it the 901 should provide adequate service.
Putting Swepco lube in them helps, some will say.
Clutches are about $150.00 more than like years. They are the pull type and were only produced 2 years.

Fun cars!

Check out the 901 like you would any other trans. Check shifting, get on and off the gas in all gears and make sure it doesn't pop out.

901's have a weak first gear so you don't want to do any burnouts. ;)

They can also be noisy at highway speeds, particularly noticeable when you get on and off the gas.

Clutch. If it ia at all stiff or chattery, negotiate the price downward. If its stiff, the pivot stud is not long for this world. Clutch should be smooth and light.

My then young '70T suffered an engine fire, thanks to a malfunctioning cold start system. Some fool in Stuttgart designed a system of pipes in the air cleaner with holes drilled in them that would squirt raw gas down the carb throats. Most have probably been disabled by now, for obvious reasons...but it is something to check.
