Tranny rebuild question
 

Just started dismantling my transmission for a rebuild over the holiday, but already run into the wall :(

How do I remove the intermediate housing (this is for a 930 box)?

I have removed the end plate, the 2 big nuts that holds the pinion & drive shafts, removed the shift fork (on the bottom of the tranny) and the reverse lock plug.

I have removed all the nuts around the housing but it seems to be "glued" to the differential housing! Based on experience with removing the shift fork, I had to use a hammer & "punch" to get it off but there's nothing on the intermediate housing to do that.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not terribly familiar with the 930, but I did do a 915 this last summer. After removing the 13 or so nuts that held the intermediate cover in place, it required some careful persuasion with a rubber mallet. Don't tap too hard -- the case is relatively soft. It should tap loose after only a couple of hits, then you should be able to jimmy it off.

is the shift fork plate off? also, the reverse detent capnut, spring and detent need to come out, because the spring loaded detent lives in the notch of the reverse shift rod and will keep you from removing the housing. the capnut is on the side of the intermediate housing, it's bore aimed at the reverse shift rod. other than that, a plastic mallet will break the housing loose from the diff housing. don't beat on any ears that might break off.

Yes, the shift fork plate is off. BTW - after I removed this plate, the entire shift rod is "dangling" inside the housing. Is that normal?

The reverse detent capnut that you mentioned - that's the one with a spring loaded and is located a little to the rear of the back up light switch? If so, yes, I have removed that too.

Do I need to remove the reverse light switch too?
