I wouldn't sell the BMW, just use it less. It's good to have a backup and they're a fine automobile. Do drive the 911 more, "they are meant to be driven". Determine how much you would really save by selling the Bimmer and getting something else. Sounds to me like you're in the catbird's seat already. Now start drivin' that "Porch' to work.

Salt affects all cars, not just Porsches. Why let your $15-20k 911 stay inside while you subject your $40-60k Bimmer (or other fine auto) to the dreaded salt? Mid-year Porsches are widely available. If yours gets rusty, buy another. Besides, you wanted a 993 anyway.

Everyone should drive their 911's every day, shame on those that don't!

I pay my taxes, now get ON the damn road!

Dave's message is funny... I do want a 993 but I think their prices are high right now. So I will use the 3.2 as it was originally intended and enjoy myself. I will worry about the future when it gets here.

I drove my 1983 SC for about 4 years as a daily driver, it was my only car and it had 150,000 miles on it when I bought it. I think these cars
do better when driven daily, mine did ! They do not hold much in the way
of groceries, I had a hard time with anything over $100.00 in groceries
getting everything in the car.

I drove my '88 as a daily driver for about 3 years, went from 110K miles to about 160K miles. It was great. It wasn't that pricey either. I say do it. Made my drive much more enjoyable.

The wife and the mistress

Keep it special. I have a 325 as my daily driver and I appreciate the P-car so much more when I make those special times to drive it and truly appreciate it. I used to love my 325 and then it just became a "car" after I drove it for a few years back and forth to work, to the store... I just wasn't special anymore -- it was just transportation. Keep your 911 as your mistress and have fun with it!

masraum 01-03-2005 07:50 AM

Well, I guess that's one of those things that makes the world go round. My '88 seemed special until the end.

I drive my 1976 911 every day 21 miles each way. Sometimes when in stop and go traffic my left calf complains. Someday I would like to retire the 911 from daily use so I can do my own work on it without worrying that it has to be done in time for the commute on monday. I suppose when engine rebuild time finally comes around I might pick-up a beater honda to give me time to do it myself. Until then I get to drive one of the best cars ever built, every day. To everyone in a mini-van or some genero-sedan all I can say is. "nya-nya-na-nya-nya!!"

I drive mine rain, hail or shine and that's my only worry too. One day I might get a daily beater, but it would probably be a 924.

jmarenas said: " SALT SALT SALT

It is a four letter word when it comes to cars, If I lived on the Left coast or other similar climate I would have a "newer" 911 and my "classic" to drive hands down. Dump the bimmer and buy a beater, and save the "classic" for the NON salt days. I know I live in Michigan. Midwest winters are hard on our vehicles!"

I agree 100%!!

cubby911T 01-03-2005 04:28 PM

As a midwesterner (northern Indiana), my drill for the past 10 years has been to drive the 911 to work a couple times a week (plus weekends) from about April 1st (or sooner if a couple good hard rain showers wash the s*lt off the roads) through early December (or whenever the snow starts to fly).

I agree with the "specialness" point....that is, if I drove the 911 every single day, it would lose a bit of its charm for me. Driving the Honda in between times (and throughout the winter) preserves that "giddy" feeling I get when driving the 911. And there's NOTHING like that first drive in the Spring......euphoric!!!!!

Porsche 01-03-2005 06:01 PM

Yes. I drive mine everyday to work and back. It's a car. It's meant to be driven. As for it's "specialness", driving it everyday motivates me to get to work. It's gets more special each day. ;)

In my day job I work for Public Works.

We like salt so much, we put it on the roads and streets in solution before the snow!

You need a beater pu. A mini-king cab and the Porsche. You can then insure the porsche as a collectors car and the truck as a primary vehicle.

The mini king cab will tote your dog or whatever and keep it dry. You can wash it with a wand at the car wash and touch the paint up with a brush!

Let it snow, ..............let it snow, ..............let it snow.

You California types kill me..."I drive my car every day!" like that's a big deal. If you haven't lived in an area where they salt the roads just shut it already.

Phew...just had to get that out of my system. :)

I drove my SC in the snow and salt quite a bit. I think you'll find your Carrera is better than your BMW and on par with many front drive cars in the snow. You won't get obvious rust right away, but if you DIY you will notice the nice cad plating on suspension pieces and fasteners will start to pit. Al parts like your thermostat will unlikely ever come apart. If you're diligent with rinsing the car I still think you could keep the damage pretty minimal though.

I say go for it, or at the very least give it a trial run.

Drive it to death. In CO we use some nasty magnesium junk AND salt on the roads. No worries. Just keep it clean. Plus it's galvanized.

Geez, last time I checked Germany had some pretty nasty winter weather. I wonder what 911 owners drive to work there... Hmmm, maybe the 911? We in the US are the garage queen, Queens... Drive the car.

I drove mine daily for 3 yrs here in CO. No worries. The only reason I don't now is I often bring a bike along and have a Targa, so a roof rack won't work. I have a 4x4 for that. Before I had my duck I would strap a rack to the back of the car... worked great.

Doug&Julie 01-04-2005 09:09 AM

I would vote make it a daily driver, but I have to admit I sold my '88 to get a Boxster because I thought it would make a better daily driver (and it does). I CERTAINLY didn't want to drive my 911 in a Cincinnasti winter. But I'm a firm believer in a Pcar as a daily driver. It makes EVERY day special.

Now, if I could just afford two cars again...
