VIN, engine, tranny numbers ?
Recently purchased a 79 SC
Searched some threads on finding the serial numbers and decoding them. I got all that info. My vin is 9119200717 so the 717th car produced that year. (interestingly enough and totally unrelated but I am a commercial airline pilot and currently fly the B717, furthermore going through paperwork and the clutch replacement invoice was on my birthday. Had to buy the car when I saw that! I mean what are the odds?!) Engine # 6290843 I understand the engine number and VIN won't match up. It appears 717 car and 843 transmission seem pretty close. Is that likely the original motor? I have no reason to believe it is not. Transmission # 915/61 7193368 The 3368 transmission seems a long way from the other numbers. Does that indicate it is likely not original to the car? Thanks for the help! |

The actual numbers have no relationship to each other. You need to buy a COA from PCNA.

okay thanks. Thought that may be the answer but wanted to make sure before spending the money. Probably doesn't much matter anyways as I don't plan to keep the car all that original anyways.

After all these years I never compared all three of my numbers. My 79SC is also an early car, built in September 1978.
VIN: 9119210270 (the 270th car; the sixth digit (1) designates a Targa) Engine: 6290340 Gearbox: 915/61 7191375 So my gearbox is closer to 270 than yours is to 717, but still over 1000 higher than the VIN. I don't think that tells us anything, the gearboxes and engines don't have to be close to the VIN to still be original. Mark

![]() On the (very) lighter side I milked my rusted 2002 Taurus up through last month. One rear shock was empty of fluid and it actually felt like it was airborn when I encountered a bump. That does not make me an official pilot but it kind of brings us together as far as commanding aircraft. Keep us posted on progress. Edit: My cousin was a C130 pilot. He let me take a whirl in the simulator at Little Rock AFB in the 70's. Me and "my crew" died many times over.

There was a turbo carrera on BAT last week that the last three of the vin and the last three of the engine actually matched. Huge huge coincidence.

I just looked at my 88 930 COA and the VIN is 0484, the engine is 0765 and the trans is 1088.
All over the place!

Think about it
The engines are sequential to USA, ROW, Japan, etc While your car is VINed, the next car is ROW, US, Japan, will have a different sequence. If yours is a coupe, the next would be a cab or targa all having those sequential to their line. The engine and trans would be sequential to application and world wide dispersal. Bruce |
