My 911 Stinks

Hello,

Lately, my 3.2 Carrara has developed a smelly habit. Some sort of fumes are entering the cabin (especially with the windows open) It is definitely not fuel – the smell is also different from normal exhaust fumes.

It is an acrid smell that actually burns your throat and makes it difficult to breathe. It is intermittent also – just to make things even harder to identify. Any ideas? I am stumped.

Here's a pic of the culprit.

Does it smell like something electrical's burning?

Furry "freeloader" up in the heater, exhaust or engine area?

Could a rodent be impaled on an exhaust stud? At any rate, if it gets too unbearable I will take that sled off of your hands. What a beautiful beast.

I'm up for burning electrical based upon the "acrid smell" description. Look in the boot for any wires that are misshapen or discoloured.

Wow - thanks for the quick replies. All electircal systems are working fine - no blown fuses. It's not a burnt smell.

Not clutch - it does it at idle. Also, the clutch is pretty new.

Does it smell like something died? Look around the engine compartment, especially behind the alternator shroud and near the cylinders. Rats and mice are known to inhabit those areas, and then die. Also, I've heard they can crawl up into the heater system as well.

Hideous sulpher smell? Check the water level in battery. This happened to my brother's 1984.

The battery is 3 months old. It is definately coming from the rear of the car.

Yes - it has a cat - do they stink when they get old?

Cats will smell if they get old and clogged. The cat on my father's 88 is clogged up and it reeks when your sitting at a stop light. Hard to describe the smell, kind of like a bad fart.

Could be the cat by the sound of it. Can they be tested? Might be easier to just bash out the guts.

When Catalytic converters first appeared in 1975 model cars, they often smelled like rotten eggs, I remember this very distinctly as I was working in the service dept. of a new car dealer at the time. They did something to remedy this by the next(?) year.

Not really like a bad fart, more like a good fart.

It sounds like it could be. I don't know of anyway to check it, although someone might. Do you have smog testing over there? If not put a euro premuffler on there and pick up a few HP while your at it.

my old '88 did a similar thing - the battery was being overcharged (about 15V from memory)

Ryan - you could be right. Does this mean a bunged alternator?
