How to drop the 915 by itself?
I have looked through the archives and could not find a tech article on dropping the 915 by itself.
My 'vette buddy finaly found the Porsche 911s weak spot. While racing a new Mustang GT he shucked 2nd gear. (he won the first race, btw) So we need to QUICKLY replace the broken parts before his first DE event next weekend. Car is an '84 Carrera - Euro. I have never dropped the tranny alone and assume it could be tricky. Any help is GREATLY appreciated and will be followed by DE pictures and race video. |
Pull the engine and the trans as ONE unit, If your good you can do it in 2-2 1/2 hours. Pulling the trans out by itself I don't think so? I mean you can give it a try but it think your time is better spent pulling it together.

I think the G50 and later can be pulled seperately....but not the 915....
|
Seems like more work (if it's even possible) than it's worth. The engine would have to move back far enough to allow the tranny to clear the 4 shift rod and input shaft and studs that hold the tranny to the engine. I hardly think there is enough room, even with a partial drop of the engine. I'd just drop the whole thing.

It looks real tight to me, that's why I'm asking you guys.
I know if it can be done someone in PelicanLand has done it and will share their secrets. We are really pressed for time and would like to avoid any extra work. I've only done an engine drop twice in the last 10 years and my buddy has never done one. The tranny needs to go to a qualified P-mechanic ASAP. |
That will not work. You can pull the trans on a 996 w/o pulling the engine. Anything before that you have to pull the engine/trans as a unit.
|
Engine and trans out in one unit is the only way.
By the way, both the 964 C2 and 993C2 and Boxster trans will come out on their own, the 996 is just designed to be a bit easier. |
Where's the DE? And no, I don't think it can be done either....
|
I would agree - you have to pull them both out as one unit.

I think it would take longer to try to work around the deal than to just R&R the whole unit. I don't believe the earlier cars had the room or were designed to do that.
|
Rarly, I think I have tried every combination of engine and tranny removal that has ever been suggested on this board. My advice is just drop the engine/tranny as a package unit.
|
Unless the 915 is in a 914 I don't think you have a chance of removing just the tranny alone. It's a good question though.

I'm pretty sure there will be a DE at Barber in March guys, can't remember the date off the top of my head. So, if the tranny refurb takes a little longer you can wait to break it in there:) I think we may also throw together a last minute instructor course at TGPR in the next couple months, so I'll try and remember to let you guys know...

News just in....Barber DE March 12 &13th. Info will be on the website soon...
|
The DE is at Talladega, hosted by HOD, Jan 17.
They will only allow 12 participants with 3 on the track at one time. This event is for novices. This is perfect for myself and my hapless buddy. I have doubled the horsepower of my car and added turbo lag. I no longer know how to drive this thing. He is new to Porsches and has never been on a track. Thank you all for the info. We are gonna have to hustle to make the date. Also, you can't run Barber with out previous DE experience, their rule. |
Hopefully that means we will see you at Barber in a couple months then! Being one of the registrars, I know we could get you in, but you will have a MUCH better experience with a little time under your belt already. Barber is much too technical a track to learn on.

I'm hoping to get a lot of seat time at talladega, haven't been on a track in years (auto-x doesn't count). This car has made me gunshy in the corners. It took several months before I could comfortably run it hard through the gears in a straight line. The damned thing is squirly as hell when boost hits. Modulating the throttle above boost threshold in a corner is dramatic at best.
I really hope we can get my buddy's car car fixed in time for the DE. Going around corners is a whole different ballgame where raw power doesn't always rule. |
