rear deck lid
I've rescued an unloved rear deck lid and want to know if Porsche or any other major teams used something like this on pre 'G' cars.
It has also come to my attention that Porsche have gone this route on the new cars.

Is it steel or fibreglass?

It is f/glass and a bit tatty around some of the louvres and at the bottom where it had been standing on a concrete floor.
I think it looks as retro as possible and I am one of the VERY few non-ducktail fans.

I saw one a few years ago that looks similar to this one but it had a cover where the grill goes with louvers in it to catch air coming over the roof lineand rear window. The guy made it himself along time ago he was telling us and it looked really good on a early 911.

kycarguy, that sounds like it would be nice.
The gaping hole on mine will be filled with mesh and then the next big step is to make some 'R' type hinges. All this is on a '71 'STR' ...........!!!

I don't know if that's a good design. I'm figuring it would rob fan air?

Steve,
You mention that you want to go the mesh route - do you still have your old decklid grille, and if so, do you plan on keeping it? Cheers! Willem Fick

William, I have got it as I also use the std deck lid and I also have a ducktail which was on the car until Sunday afternoon, but I am short of a decent grill.

Steve,
Damn! I am also short of a decent grille, and was kinda hoping you're selling! Glad you lost the tail though - first thing that disappeared off mine too, as I had this fugly turbo tail on my '70 when I first bought her. Nice looking car - I like the RSR look lights! More pictures though?! Cheers! Willem Fick

Hi Willem
Sorry, but with a quick glance I thought your name was William and it wasn't until your second response that I noticed you a quick 6500 rpm blast through the gears away from me. It is a 71 2.2 T which I am giving a retro look. One day I will rebuild the motor and try get a useful and reliable 160 bhp. In the meantime I am obsessed with making it as light as possible. RoninLB: Surely it would allow more air in or perhaps let hot air out. I have to admit I've never seen a deck lid like this before.....maybe there was a reason?

Willem here are two pics - the action shot is how I got it apart from some trim removed and the other is what it looks like now.

I was just relating to the un-written so-called fact of not running the rear lid un-latched 'cause of a decrease of airflow to the fan afaik. I've never really heard or read much about any of it. I think you would be the first guy to come up with hard info if you research it.

Ronin, you got me thinking about this one. They say a Porsche generates lift at high speed. If this was in fact the case, surely there would be no air getting to the fan as it would be sucked away by the low pressure area. (the low pressure causes lift).
Taking it a step further, wouldn't ducktail equipped cars run cooler? I'm not a rocket scientist, but I also don't wasnt to be a guinea pig left with a cooked motor. Are there any clever people out there with ideas/theories/wind tunnel data etc?
