Rebuilding a CD Unit (Wayne?)

I caught Dave's post on his 73.5T suddenly dying on the interstate ramp and the tremendous aid the Pelicanheads were providing. Several felt it might be the CD, but luckily it was only points. I have the original Bosch CD unit in my car which has not given up the ghost yet. These are no longer available from Porsche dealers (man they were $990+!!), so the Permatune seems to be the easiest and cheapest replacement. The reviews on the Permatune have not been favorable.

Wayne, if your reading this, where can you get the Bosch CD rebuilt? Anyone you know who can do the job properly? It has to be far more cost effective to rebuild it. This really has me intrigued.

Regards
Bob

Bob:
Another route would be to call up some of your local independent Porsche shops. In the past, I've heard two of them in my area comment they knew people to send them out to for rebuilding.

Can this company do the job?

Sunroof 01-04-2005 11:20 AM

Hey Scott.
That is great. I saw that they do indeed have rebuilt Bosch CDs in their inventory. Definitely added this site to my file for future reference.

Has anyone ever used them? Reputable?

Greatly appreciate the info.

Bob,

Know anyone that knows which end of a soldering iron to tin, and basic discrete transistor circuitry?

The following thread has all of the technical info to test and repair/rebuild a 3-pin CDI unit ...

The owner is lorenfb here on the board. No personal experience, but he seems to know his stuff.

You first need to consider whether you want to rebuild the stock CDI box. If it is a concours car, then yes. If you want to save $$ and do it yourself, then yes. If not, then no. Search for the huge number of posts on this issue. Apparently a new MSD box is cheaper than Loren's rebuild cost, tho it is debatable as to whether it offers any benefit.

Loren hates performance chips but is a known expert on CDI box repair....

I recently used them [through my shop] to rebuild my 'spare' 6-pin Bosch CD unit. Soon after, my Perma-Tune failed (@ about 9 months after purchase) and I plugged in the rebuilt. No go.

Took it back and after a week, got another back. That one works fine. Cost me about a week, plus shipping back & forth. So my experience is not good, overall.

Zims in DFW does an exchange program. Very reasonably priced if I recall.
