Is there supposed to be a seal between the engine compartment lid and the body?
 

My car is an 1989 Carrera but is "new" to me. The only seal between the engine compartment and the body on my car is the one that runs along the bottom edge of the engine lid right above the backlight, number 30 I believe in this picture:

Any way, my car has that one in place but does not appear to have seals numbers 38, and 39 in the above picture (i.e. Pelican Part Numbers C-504-113-02 and C-504-111-02). I assume these seals seal the engine lid to the body when it's closed.

Why would my car be missing them? Would the PO have eliminated them for some reason? I guess I need to get them reinstalled? The Pelican catalog says that they are "vital for proper engine cooling". Why?

Anyone have a picture of how these seals look on the car. I assume they just seal the edges of the engine compartment opening to the engine compartment lid?

Looks like 38 and 39 are to seal the engine in (EDIT for clarity: to seal the engine into the engine bay. You can see the seal between the cooling tin and the body).
I don't recall ever seeing a side seal on a 911, just the one that seals against the trailing edge of the lid.

No seal between rear deck lid and body, the seals you are referring to need to be installed, seals the engine sheet metal to the engine/lower body/engine compartment so you are not recirculating hot air in the engine compartment and being sucked back into the cooling fan.

Tell me like I'm clueless (because I am), are you saying that seals 38 and 39 are NOT located between the engine deck lid and the body, but rather go somewhere else?

So chances are they're there and I'm just looking in the wrong place for them?

If you lay down and look up from underneath chances you can see the seals in question and they probably are there just hard to see, the picture is the strip that does run across the back of the deck lid. Try to stick your finger between the engine sheet metal and the engine compartment you should feel these seals, if no seal around the perimeter of the sheet metal then you probably need to get some. I thought I had a picture on hand but I don't, sorry. Jerome

The drawing is misleading. The "missing" seals are about 3" wide and hang down like a skirt around the perimeter of the engine. The touch the black metal "tray" that goes around the motor. They aren't really obvious.
