upgrading AC
 

My old york compresor on my 81 SC was getting very noisy, obviously en route to totally failing,so I had to remove it. I have posted a number of WTB's for a used York and have received numerous offers to sell compressors from later models. What is required to install the later version compressor( carrera) into the SC? Presumably the bracket is different, but are there required changes to the wiring or "plumbing"? Some posts suggest that I have to add another condensor. Will the old lines work or should I add barrier hoses? Lastly, is there any other source for Sanden systems other than Griffith's? I called to inquire about purchasing one of their systems but the guy was such a complete jackass I will never purchase anything there. Given the age and miles on my car ( approaching 300K) I don't want to devote a whole lot of money to the process, but I don't look forward to sweltering next summer either!

International Compressor in Van Nuys carries Sanden's. Also, If I remember, SC's use flare fittings and 84 and newer use O-rings on the fittings. I converted my R-12 pcar to R-134A with new 134A fittings, but you can get adapters. Can't help you on the bracket issue, my car had a Sanden when I bought it. I know a guy on the board (TonyG) who just charged his SC with 134A and no modifications, works great. Re the barrier hoses, yes if your replacing them anyway, if they''re in good shape use 134A its about $5/can and so what if you use a can or two a year. R-12 is like $60-100/lb and you have to be licensed. Do a search on Jim Sims on the board and you'll find out all you want to know about A/C. Jim recommends R134A with the proper oil in the system.

Don't mess with the York. They're inefficient and take up a bunch of space. Go with a Sanden or Nippondenso. Compressors Interenational in Van Nuys has them, but you'll need a special bracket. I think Vertex sells a combo package...bracket and compressor for about $400.

There are some guys here on the board who are gutting the a/c systems from their cars. You might contact them to see if they have any parts that are usable.

I agree with Scott. For the same price or less, go with one of the rotary compressors. Less drain on the engine.

I got a brand new Seltec (same mount as Sanden) on ebay for $100 range and fab'd up a bracket to mount it myself. Much smoother. ACKITs will do the hoses if you mail them yours, they will make a new set up and use your old fittings (if salvageable). Last I heard $125 to $150 range. They also have a good AC BBS for getting questions answered, much like Pelican.

Sorry for the late response, I was out of town for couple of days. Scott, the mount you are looking at didn't do a thing for me. It didn't mate up with the Nippondenso mount, it may work for the York. I bought the TM-15D. Worked like a champ.

Probably, I had a Nippondenso and it didn't. The York mount is square and it would likely work.

Buy a Seki Seiko compressor if you want a true rotary compressor. The Sanden, Seltic and nippondenso are WOBBLE plate compressors.

SABB 9000 used a seiki seiko compressor. I believe you can use the same mount (York to Sanden) to mount a seiki seiko compressor to a car that was fitted with a York.

The other option for a York compressor is to buy the smaller York compressor instead of the "Truck" York Compressor that was fitted to 911 in the 70's and 80's.

I have a rebuilt smaller York compressor (never installed) for sale. I brought this compressor, but than found and brought a seiki seiko compressor. How about $50.00 plus shipping? Can send you a picture if you are interested. Shipping is from Chicago.
