CNC "watershields" my latest project.
Last month I bought myself a new (used) toy, it's a Bridgeport Boss 5 rigid ram CNC knee mill. I've wanted a CNC for what seems like forever and one of the first things I plan to make is a cool looking air filter setup for my carbs. Well that got me talking to RoninLB in another thread awhile back and he suggested there may be others who'd like a set while I'm at it. I'm including a basic design for the top for you guys to comment on. I plan to sell these as reasonably as possible but I'd like some feedback on the general concept.

Christian,
My $.02. Like the regular K&Ns, these would be susceptible to rain/wash water entering the engine via the flat bottom filter plate (unless the top were built with a large angled lip like the Watershield housings). If you could somehow manufacture the base plate so water is encouraged to drain away from the intake openings, the shape of the top cover wouldn't matter as much. Sherwood |

Chris,
Very cool you guys bought the CNC. I'm sure you;'ll think of a hundred items to make now. I know I've got a few machined and welded ideas for this winter si we'll have to get together. My car is done for the year since the axle bolts dropped out and tore up one cv. Good thing is it's not too expensive to repais and now I can get started on all the other winter projects. Got up this morning to 25 degrees. John

Sherwood, I will be putting in provisions to prevent water entering the engine for those that don't run the stacks inside their filters but I should note that PMO recommends the stack be left on with their carbs and I would recommend it as well because the stack will smooth out the airflow entering the carb and make more HP. With stacks in place I need to worry about keeping water out of the various vent holes. Wash water is another issue and I've made it a habit over the years to always cover my air filter(s) on any engine I'm washing. My bases will incorporate a raised area around the vents and intake holes and a provision for drainage. I'm alos going to incorporate a provision for the oil tank breather for those who prefer to vent through the engine.
John, Actually I bought the CNC myself athough it is installed at the business. The plan is to start a small side business making custom parts for car and motorcycle enthusiats. I haven't forgotten about the track video BTW, just been slammed at work and spending any free time playing with this new toy. Do you, Pete and Vance have broadband? I figure I'll put it on the companies FTP once I capture it from the camera and send you guys the link. Sorry to hear about the axle bolts, was this the source of the mysterious thump? -Chris

Chris,
Vance and I have cable, not sure what Pete has. We'll have to get together soon. Also, I'd love to try the CNC program if it can be run seperately. John

I have DSL.
Chris, we missed you last Sunday at Nelson. There were only 12 cars running vs. 46 (3 totals) on Saturday. Can't wait to see what comes of the new CNC toy. Pete

Chris, Excellent. However, with the air intake stacks in place, I wonder how effective these are in preventing standing water from seeping into the intake, especially while the car is parked. If you have provisions for water drainage from the bottom plates, all the better. Best wishes on this project, Sherwood |

Pics of the mill, so to receive modern controls. I've got it hooked to a PC now and "drip feed" code to it. The new controller will control everything except spindle speed from the computer. It also has a jog pendant for setup.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I got the basic jig for the shields done tonight. I'm hoping to eventually be able to put custom scripting on top like engine size for example. A more expensive version might incorporate velocity stacks and taller filters if I can find them. I will offer these, buffed ready to go or be polished or anodized. Powdercoat is also an option. I hope to really allow the purchaser to customize them to their tastes.

Another idea I have is for fuel rails tapped for AN fittings in either flow through or dead head arrangement with possible a provision for a pressure gauge. These would take the place of the banjo fittings and rubber line.

Mike,
I haven't figured prices yet since I'm still developing the covers. I have the tops about how I'd like them and now I'm working on the bottoms which are much more involved. My final plan is for a light weight racing set with little "decoration" and a nicer more detailed set for street/show vehicles. I'll also offer the tops only for those that just want to dress up there K&N watershields. I'll post a pic of one of the tops in a day or two (digicam is on loan to a friend).
