gas tank inlet foam piece

How hard is it to replace the round foam seal that is on the trunk side of the gas tank inlet? Or maybe it used to be a single piece and the rest of it is in the area the gas tank filler door protects?

I forgot to replace it when I dropped the fender even thou I have the new super soft foam gasket. I imagine it's a super pia without dropping the fuel inlet metal. Then you'll probably have to slice the new one and try to squeeze under the fender area with glue attached to it. I'm waiting it out.

Has anyone replaced this item w/o pulling the tank or the steel inlet tube? If so, did you go in from the trunk or from the gas cap side? Thxs.

Seems like the foam piece on my '73 had a cut in it so it slipped over the inlet tube without any disassembly of the tank, tube, or rubber connecting hose. I remeber placing it around the tube, then pushing the 1/2 that goes through the opening in the tub in with my fingers. All done from inside the trunk. No glue on mine. Degree of difficulty 0.25.

If the cut in the foam ring isn't stock, you could still cut the ring, place it over the tube, then orient the slit so it can't be easily seen, then poke the 1/2 through the hole in the tub. Only the hard core guys would poke around enough to find that trick.

Also, while mine was out, I used a quick shot of some semi gloss black paint to cover up the chips in the age stiffened foam.

That sounds great. Thx! I am definitely ready for a 0.25 task.
