Anyone put their car AND trailer in the garage?

I'm trying to work out if my car AND trailer will fit in my garage. Can someone post the dimensions of an average trailer? I understand there are differences but I just want to know if I'm in the ball park.

What is the height of the trailer - i.e. what height do the wheel sit at?

How wide are these things?

Thanks
Tristan

mine is in my driveway right now. I'll measure it later and let you know the dimensions. It don't think it would fit in the average garage. It might fit in mine if I didn't have all the other crap in there.

Thanks JZ. My garage is a 1.5 but it seems high enough. I'm concerned with the length.

You'll need a nine foot door opening. Most around these parts are eight feet. Even with a niner you'll really have to develop fine backing skills - the trailer will be nearly eight across the fenders.

Good to hear from you Ray. How's the motor doing?

I really need a trailer this year and have nowhere to put it. My car is a killer to drive to the track. More than 2 hrs is to much.

It is a little over 22' feet long and is 26" high. I didn't measure the width. Mine is a standard tandem axle trailer.

Have you thought of renting storage? I don't know what open storage for a 16 or 18 foot trailer would cost, but I wonder...

Would the City let you put a door on the back wall of the garage? Is there room behind the garage? If you have 9' doors, you should be able to back it through. esp. since you'll have a straight shot at it. I have a 9" opeing (gate) in my fence and I have to swing the trailer a bit..I can make it OK, but it is tough sometimes.

9' wide. With my car on the lift I can open the garage door, so a low trailer like mine should be able to fit under a standard door (8" high I think). The car is higher on the lift than it would be on my trailer. A high Featherlite, like Jeff's, may not fit. Also, Pete has a 16' trailer and last time I was at his house, he had the car in there...on the trailer! E-mail Pete.

Also, I may have to bring the trailer out this weekend and haul a 911 chassis, I'll get dimensions for you.

I think Pete got his for less than $4000 new from a place in Indiana(?). What's your budget?

What are you going to tow with?

I'm close to getting an Acura MDX. I'd like to spend about $2-3k.

Folks are telling me I can't tow with the 540i because it's too light.

I think my Jeep is 3800lbs (published curve weight?). It is light, but the 911 and trailer sum to about 3000lbs. With tools and all the track equipment, the Jeep is probably 4500+ (including me in it). A load distributing hitch set up would help if I were to go over 4000 lbs.

Do they make a class 3(5 with dist. hitch) hitch for a 540?

Hey Tristan,
I've got an 18ft, attached to a frame that's bolted to the garage floor.
I just use the trailer as a parking spot. You can easily get away with a 16ft, I needed the extra length to carry the bike.

I'm not sure at all. My other issue with the 540i is that I'd get the 6spd and then I have to work the clutch in all the heavy summer traffic going to Gingerman. Road America is fine. BMW says do not tow with the 540.

I just checked a 4WD 4-dr Cherokee is actually about 3400lbs...

Manual 540 would be tough..and I don't think the 540 has the chassis points to mount a hitch very smartly...

Why not buy a new trailer like Pete has and a used Cherokee (those things are cheap and plentiful). But then you'll run out of space to park

Hi Pete
