1984 steering wheeel

Help all, new owner of a 84 TL, need pics of the "correct" steering wheel for my newly acquired Turbo Look.

Here's what I know:

This is what is on the car now: http://www.luoxley.com/steeringwheel.jpg

Here's what I think it should look like: http://www.luoxley.com/steeringwheel2.jpg

But I'm not really sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tnx, Bill

the 3 spoke porsche wheel is the unit my '84 came with. I replaced it with the 930s wheel, looks and feels MUCH better. IMHO

Here's a picture of my 930S wheel - purchased from our host:

And the tired 4-spoke wheel that was on the car when I got it:

Bill: "Right" is basically whatever you want as long as it is safe and functional. If you want the look of an original wheel (as in concours) then that's another story. I believe the 4-spoke is what came standard on an 84 Carerra. Very few folks like them (I replace mine with a 930S) and therefore you can find them on Ebay for next to nothing.

Actually, the four spoke leather wrapped steering wheel became standard with the '85s, so 84CAB is correct about the 3 spoke being the original wheel in the 84s.

As Por_sha911 said, if you want concours, then the 3 spoke is what you want. Otherwise, its really what you like that matters. You're the one driving it!

What steve says! 84 had the same wheel as the SC. They are not very nice, the center is plastic that feels cheap and the leather usually peels by now. A steering wheel is changed in 10 minutes and the least offensive modification, even to a purist, since you can change back to stock very quickly. Most people put their worn old wheel in the shed and go aftermarket.

Bill, I'd keep the wheel you have.

You would be surprised how horrible the stock wheel feels. You may want to just go sit into a car with the stock wheel. It is way too far against the dash and has a real large diameter. The hub adapter you get with a momo brings the wheel closer to the driver, a much more ergonomic position.

I felt like driving a school bus when I got my car and immediately changed the stock wheel. My leather dash was riddled with scratches from the previous owner, accidentially hitting it with his fingernails when turning the wheel. The steering wheel design and positioning is very strange on these cars.

Keep the one you have and if you really want a stock one, there must be hundreds of them around for next to nothing. Keep your eye open for a good one as they are cheap enough. A decent racing wheel is a couple hundred bucks.

Bill,
I have an '84.
I have the original wheel and yes it is the 3 spoke shown.
I have the exact same Momo wheel on that you have.
Leave it on! I have a 1" spacer which really help, but the smaller diameter and thicker wheel are great for driving.

Counter point.....

The stock wheel is eccentric....with a better straight-ahead view of the gauges...the aftermarket is concentric and blocks part of the gauges. Some say, fine...rotate the gauges, but that's a kludge job and the right fix is to re-calibrate the speedo a la RUF style with the redline at 12 o'clock and turn re-locate the signal indicators properly left-and-right. Another expense. Stock wheel also offers more leverage and a "finer" edge of control.....

How 'bout having the stock wheel skinned-over in new leather to make it fatter ??

Or go with a nice 930S with the eccentric 1/2 inch adapter?

Thank You,
I just started with a pretty clean car to begin with and then improved upon it by adding sport seats and a like new steering wheel I picked up on ebay. It has 83K miles and is a constant work in progress.
