What Compression Tool and Timing Light do you use/recommend?
Now that the holidays are behind us, it's time to get the ball rolling.
I'm gathering some tools and need a compression tester. What have the "experts" found to be the best type? Also which timing light is in your tool box. Mine is old and crappy and I've never liked it. I use a Craftsman timing light which I am quite pleased with - I am currently also in search of a compression tester so any feedback / replies will benefit at least two of us!!!

Don't get the cheap timming light. Get the one that you can adjust on the back with a dial.

Not trying to hijack your thread, but does anyone know what is the best timing lite to use with Electromotive ignition?

My Craftsman timing light (adjustable) is easy to use and nice and bright. They also make a screw in type compression tester (Sears #00947089000 Mfr. model #47089.) I have an old "plug and hold" tester from my VW days but you're better off with the screw in type. You might want to add a leakdown tester because that will provide more information on different internal components - rings, valves, etc. - than a compression tester. |
i had a $250 snap-on timing light........someone stole it so i replaced it with a $40 autozone light, both had mr. dial.
i notice zero difference between the 2. |
I have an adjustable timing light from Harbor Fright. I also have a box full of pistons with holes in them. I draw a corelation. It was OK for my truck and the Jeep with the SBC.
I would suggest getting the one Wayne sells and it's not cheap. However, neither were those pistons, not to mention the car, which MikeZ now owns as a result of the debacle. |
