run this engine # for me please
6550481 (911/44) or i may have written down incorrectly by one digit 6556481 (911/44). i was literally hanging from the rafters in the warehouse trying to read the number. thanks!

It seems to be a California emissions 2.7S/Carrera, 160 HP.
911/44 is a California emissions 2.7S/Carrera. The S/N is: 6 = 6-cylinder 5 = 911S/Carrera California 5 = 1975 XXXX = 4-digit consecutive serial number usually starting with 0001. Exceptions: Starting with 9001 = engine for Sportomatic. From that engine you could build a nice light weight 2.8S 11.5:1 twin plug that few could distinguish from an original ‘68L. Best, Grady |
911/44 belongs in a H-series (Aug 74 - July 75) 2.7 California 911S or Carrera. Same as 911/42 except for air pump, thermal reactors and EGR emissions control. 160hp @ 5800rpm, 162 ft/lb @ 4000 rpm.
I can't find the engine number in my source (Red Book). Lots of number series close to it (656xxxx etc.) but no 655xxxx. For instance, 6450001 - 6452440 are listed as 49-state US cars including Cali, but showing 911/43 type. Someone with a better source should help out. LeRoux Edit: Doh, Grady beat me to it. |
thanks guys. sold to me as a 75 2.7S so everything is correct. bought it rebuilt 0 miles so i will not be tearing it down but i am considering the H/C RS carb'd route depending on funds and patience. suggestions?

It must be the difference in time zone, not knowledge. If an engine like this had been just stuck up in the rafters when newish after a crash or uprate to a 3.0 in ’78 – Great. An original, low mileage, un-molested 2.7 is a real find. If it is a worn-out, high mileage, thermo reactor engine – Tread carefully. Best, Grady |
