1978-1979 911 Fuel Pump (WTB)

I have just taken out the fuel pump from my 911. The car would not fully start this morning, so I looked in the 101 Projects book, and it said the pump would be bad if the pump started to run after 2 or 3 turns of the key, in which, in my case, it did.
Anyway, I just removed it, got the part numer, typed it into the Pelican Catalog search, and I found out it is for a 1978-1979 Porsche 928. The engine in my 911 is a 1978-1979, but the car is not a 928 model. My questions are:

1) Would the 928 fuel pump be the same as the 911 for 1978-1979?

2) What is the spec for the pump for a 3.0 911 engine?

3) Where can I find an inexpensive fuel pump ($100 or less if possible)?

4) Does anyone here have a pump that they are willing to sell for a 1978-1979 3.0 engine that is in new or excellent condition?

5) Is it safe to replace the 911 fuel pump with a non 911 pump, or does the 911 require the pump for that year and for the 911 model?

Here is the layout on the pump (lines act as spaces):

0580254984 ______________ 011

12V Germany _____________ 731

The part number for a 78-79 3.0 is 911-608-102-00 which is also one of the pumps used on a -79 928. Bosch list the long number 0580254984 as correct for 79 3.0 and the 928. So it looks like you've got the right pump. I don't think you'll be able to find a Bosch pump for under $100 they are usually $200+. There may be some other makes, I think Pierburg(sp?) makes one. Personally I would stay with the correct Bosch pump, but I can understand the money issue.

Thanks for the info 5speed.

Does anyone here have a fuel pump for the 1978-79 3.0 that is in excellent condition?

If not, can someone direct me to somewhere that they will have these pumps cheaper than Pelican, or Parts Heaven?

Thanks

Pelican's prices are better than dealer and they know their stuff. Since you have the Bosch part numbers you might start calling local parts houses. I think there's a place down in Burlingame, PM'd you.

When my fuel pump died on my '72 with '78 SC motor, I yanked it off and discovered that it was a (I think) 0 580 254 267 (or something like that). It came up as a second fuel pump in early turbos, IIRC. When I called a local parts place and ordered the pump (couldn't wait for Pelican to send one cross country) one with a 0 580 254 909 part number came. I called them and they told me that this is a Bosch universal pump that replaced the one I had, and that it also works for many other CIS systems from BMW, Audi, VW, etc. They also told me if it didn't work I can return it.

After close to 10k miles, it's still working great. Cost was $150, btw. Maybe Pelican can order one for you?

I replaced my 78SC fuel pump while looking for a problem. It turned out to be something completely different. So I have a 1978SC fuel pump. I don't know the MFG. It just says 12V Germany and has a bunch of numbers on it.

RazorRacer, what is the number on the pump (that looks something like "0580254984" on it)? The layout on your pump sounds similair to mine. If you give me the number, I can type it into Pelican catalog and double check to see if it is the one I need for my car. How much do you want for the fuel pump? How much have you used the pump?

Rufblackbird, thanks for the suggestion. I'm researching a few pumps now.

Thanks

They are 0580254984. I will bring it to work today if you want me to send it to you. Just give me $50 plus shipping. It was on the car when I bought it at 64K miles and I replaced it around 74K. I don't know the history of the fuel pump. I thought the problem with my car was the check valve in the pump, but it turned out to be a combination of the accumulator and the distributor. So the pump should still be good.

If you PM me, I won't get it until tonight.
