915 rebuild question, Pinion shaft gear stack slop

I am putting back together the gear stack on the pinion shaft after replacing a few items gears 1 & 2 and in between. I heated the bearing up and slipped it back on with a little persuasion. Now with the bearing on there is a small amount of play (1/16"-1/8") between 1st gear and the bearing.

Is this normal or should the gears be tight against the thrust washer and bearing (no slop)?

The car is a '85 Carrera.

Thanks

be sure you have the right bearing, there are two in the 915 that appear interchangable, but are not, I did swap thiem in error and my gears mismatched until I got it sorted, I do not remember the problem you are describing, but it does not sound right.

The ID and OD of the two bearings are the same, but the stack height is not.

Thanks Jim,

I am sure the bearing is right because I did not disassemble the input shaft stack.

put on the 5th gear bearing race and the 5th/reverse hub, and tighten the pinion nut to seat everything properly. then see what you have.
