Now those Z06s will come up even faster on my tail at the track:

Holy Crap!!!!
Oh wait---Porsche hasn't unleashed the new Turbo! Muwahahahaha!!!! |
Yeah, but I'll bet the Z06 is 1/3 the price of the Turbo
|
Unfortunately, you are probably right, Thom.
I think Car and Driver said it best earlier this year."The Corvette is a better bargain but it is not the same as a 911." Not a direct quote but i feel the same. I could have bought a Corvette when I was looking for a 911. I am glad I didn't. Wayne |
Sounds like the 997 Turbo better have a few tricks up it's sleeve.

The Z06 is an awesome car. It's featured in the new AutoWeek. 11.xx second 1/4 mile. 0-60 in under 4 seconds. 0-100 in 7 seconds. O-100KM/H in 1st gear. 187MP/H (300KM/H) for Euro sales purposes. $65K base price and $70K's with some options. Carbon fenders, wheel housings and floor standard ...... pretty impressive stuff.
But I'll still stick with the German stuff. :D It's not how fast you go, it's how you go fast. |
Great specs and performance......but you still have the crappy GM interior & clunkiness to deal with. I'll bet these babies go for well over sticker......so much for the "great buy"......
|
That's a pretty impressive package.
I can't wait to see what the Lingenfelter / Doug Rippie / Mallet guys do to them! |
I believe it will also have 500hp.
|
What's incredible these days is the quantum leap in performance standards. Last week's AutoWeek had a retrospective on the 1979 930. At the time, it was considered by most to be the ultimate supercar. And it had mindboggling - for the day - performance to match: 0-60 in 5.3 and a top speed of 165MPH. Today, that's almost in the ho-hummm range ....... Where will it end?
|
Lets get real guys.... For $75k you get a plastic car with fiberglass leaf springs....
|
I've driven both an 88 911 and a 99 Corvette hardtop at DE events at MidOhio (among other places). Both are excellent cars in their own way on the track. I've also had the pleasure of driving the "old" Z06 hard on some twisty back roads. For those of you who haven't driven a newer Corvette in anger, you wouldn't believe how good a car it is. I'm sure that the new Z06 will be incredible -- and I'd bet that the average guy would find it more thrilling to drive on the track than a new AWD Turbo.

two words: dry sump
|
The Z06 is an incredible car. Just keep your eyes closed.....crap slap GM kwality job.
|
3100lbs?? That thing is flyweight!!

I saw the article on the Z06 in Motor Trend, they have pics of it with the body off (aluminum chassis, carbon floors, etc.) - looks like a race car! I've always immediately dismissed whatever the "new and improved" Corvette of the day was. This one, though, may be the real deal. |
We live in an incredible age of performance automobiles.....never forget this.
|
Even the old 385hp ones were autocross monsters. Despite their size (very wide) they really are awesome performers.
|
I think the difference from the earlier ones, though, is that this one is technically pretty interesting.
|
Agreed, but even the old ones kicked butt at the Solo II nationals for a couple years. I imagine the new ones will be even faster. For awhile, it looked like the Z06 was a one car class.
