Traffic lawyer near Kingston, NY
Yeah, yeah, I know. And after I read the post on speeding too. NYS thruway near Kingston 83 in a 65 mph zone. Laser was used. V1 picked it up, but once they zap you with laser it's too late. I am looking to plead it down to non-moving violation. Anyone know of a lawyer "familiar" with the area? It wouldn't hurt if the guy was the DA's or judge's brother or something either

I got a laser ticket a couple of years ago in pretty much the same area--Saugerties, on the Thruway. Probably the same trooper, since the cops there refer to him as "Laser Boy." Anyway, I went to court in Saugerties--cost me a three-hour round-trip drive--and they couldn't have been nicer. Didn't even want to hear my excuses, didn't want to see my courtesy badge, the trooper simply made it a non-moving violation and thanked me for coming up. And it wasn't even the same trooper. I made a stupid mistake and came on the wrong night, and the judge said, "Well, your guy isn't here tonight, but let me find another trooper who will stand in for him, so you don't have to come all the way back."
Wear good clothes--a jacket and tie will put you in the judge's camp and out of the butt-crackers and nose-ringers who will probably otherwise be 80 percent of the courtroom populace. If it were me, I wouldn't bother with a lawyer, unless it were the ticket that put me over the edge into a suspended license, or I was doing 150. 83 in a 65 isn't that big a deal. sTephan

It very well may have been the same guy. I was literally 3 miles or so from my exit-the Saugerties. I am a bit farther away than you, so it would be a 4 1/2 or 5 hour round trip, plus court time. And if I get a ticket on the way up there...

Mike,
Pretty good advice from Steve. If you can't get a decent plea, you are entitled to an adjournment to obtain counsel. See if you can work it out with the trooper. If you can't, then ask for an adjournment to retain a lawyer. If your trooper doesn't appear that evening (don't count on this happening), you're almost certain to get a decent deal. Dress nice (shows respect), be polite - you'll be okay. Good luck.

Hey Mike,
Try to negotiate yourself, and if you don't get a non-speeding offense, ask for an adjournment for counsel. Then, PM me and I can appear on your behalf. I've been in that court several times, and practice Vehicle and Traffic defense an awful lot. You are not off the charts with that speed. See if they will give you a 1201(a)-Parking on Pavement or an equipment violation under section 375. And, call the guy "Trooper". Between using his correct title, and knowing the relevent section of the law, he might be impressed, and reduce to one of those sections. By the way Richard G., great to see you back here!!!! Looking forward to the Spring run, whenever Adam decides to organize again........Ha. Good luck and Regards,

I got a ticket ...same place this summer, Thruway @ Kingston, they dropped it to -failure to yield to a traffic control device. Still a big waste of time!

Court date is next Wednesday. I am going to try to plead it down myself. Of course my driver license renewal by mail has not come thru yet, and it expires the day before trial. Looks like I have to head to DMV for a temporary while I wait for the permanent one to arrive by mail. I don't know why NY state offers the service if turn around time is so long. I sent it in a while ago, complete with payment and eye exam form. Bummer. I hate DMV offices, but there is one in Brooklyn whose lines are generally not too long.
