Gas tank prep for rebuild
So 2 months ago I was doing an oil change on my 1980SC and I found a good amount of piston ring pieces and some other metal in the strainer. Needless to say I got Wayne’s book and will need to do a full rebuild. My question is - since the oil is drained, and it may be up to a year by the time I get it completely re done (hopefully sooner), will the gas in the tank and the gas lines be ok? Or what specifically should I do in the Pacific NW since I can’t start the car to ensure no gas issues clogging etc down the road? Gas is about 3 months old now in the tank and maybe a 1/3 of the tank. Thanks.

I had a car I was restoring and was worried about the tank internal. I filled the tank and then put a good dose of 2 stroke oil in there. Ended up being over five years and the tank was perfect.

Having just replaced my fuel lines from the tank to the motor with Len Cummings’s lines, you could drain the tank, and disconnect the fuel lines, which would drain them.

If it’s ethanol contaminated gas, I would Not trust it that long. I would drain it by disconnecting the fuel line in the engine compartment and running the fuel pump until empty, or by increasing the plug in the bottom of the tank.
