will paint stripper hurt the galvanizing???

I want to strip my 1977 - and I love galvanized cars !!!! after 6 914's I have a car with no rust that I can find.......and its in 16 parts for paint......
But I need to know if I should stay away from any type of stripper or is there a brand / type that is better than any other????

Thanks for the help you all are a great asset ( did I say ASSet and stripper in the same post ????)

Aircraft Paint Stripper will not harm the galvanized metal, only the paint.

Sanding, grinding and most types of media blasting will damage the galvanized coating.

What Ed said.

Once done with the paint stripper use a wire cup-brush on an angle grinder to clean the surface off completely - it won't damage the galvanizing.

Regards!

Most paint strippers contain an organic solvent that dissolves the paint. The above posts are correct that this will not harm the galvanizing. Contact with acids would be most likely to cause damage.

For what its worth, galvinazation is a sacrificial coating on the metal -- even under paint it rarely survives more than 10-15 years, so there's pretty good odds much of the car isn't galvanized anymore anyway.

If I was stripping a car of that age, I'd strip to bare metal and reprime with POR or a zinc-containing primer.
