glass lens on gauge... something is on mine, tell me what it is please!

I repaired my speedo gear and cleaned the speedometer glass at the same time. Other than dust it was very clean. When putting my gauges back in after the LED upgrade I started to put in my oil/fuel level gauge in and noticed the glass was dirty almost like someone has been in there before. Upon further investigation on the ring this is the first time its been open. Am I correct in assuming there is something on the entire gauge like a film of some sort? It doesn't feel smooth like glass and there is a texture kind of like a sticker or film. What is the best way to clean or what have others done? There are specs of something on there that I can't figure out why... This is for an 87' 911. Thanks! Bryan

I am pretty sure mine has a film back because it's peeling off internally and it really triggers my OCD I'll have to open it up and remove whatever is there. Sent from my G8142 using Tapatalk

Yes, the film is there as some sort of anti-shatter/anti vibration element. When mine fogged some years ago I used a razor blade and scraped it off. Gauge is clear as can be now...never an issue with it. Pelican sells replacement lenses, though, if you want to replace.

I had that on my 87. Was like a clear piece of vinyl. Some say it is in case the glass breaks in a wreck but I’ve never heard of a true source of that. Just wrapping up my gauge refresh now, I removed it and aren’t worried about it.

I think its just against fogging up like done on gasmasks. The left outer gauges are always prone to fog up from moisture. | ||

Thanks for the great info. It appears to be on the opposite side of the unleaded fuel sticker. Any tricks (besides razor blade) for clean removal? Happy to try razor blade but figured I would poll the others before I start.. heat, chemical, etc.. work better? Will remove this morning.

Wife's hairdryer for a little heat and once you are able to get an edge with the razor blade it comes off within a few minutes.
