painting the aluminum trim

How would someone paint the door frames on a mid year 911. I think there aluminum? Do you need a special paint or primer to hold onto the aluminum or something? Thanks, David

David, A friend of mine just did a 356 Outlaw, he also powder coated all the aluminum frames. Came out very nice. Heat required for the powder to set was around 400 degrees ? Steve, R-Gruppe #123

Any ideas for when people were just painting these type things? Cost is an issue as is time. I am not even sure who would even do this stuff around here. These are all pieces that I can do again in the future if the paint should fall off with not much effort to remove. Is there say one primer better than another for this type stuff. Sorry, tough being on a tight budget. I am not scimping on paint supplies so these pieces will hopefully be the only things I have to attend to in the future. I had touched up parts of then in the past and they did hold up real well. Probably a temporary fix but if I can get a few years out of them great. Thanks for your help guys. David

Aluminum is paintable, I would suggest etching them first to make the paint stick better. Scuff them up too. Should work fine. -Chris

Etch, lightly sand with emery cloth, primer with a high quality product (Wurth, etc). Then paint to suit. They can look great (I assume you are painting them black and not yellow!). Chris

Acid-etch primer, available in spray cans for smaller jobs. Oh Yeah... don't skip the above steps about oxidation removal

There is 'trim black' spray paint that you can get at any auto parts store. Not shiny, not dull, very durable with a little prep.

Krylon semi-flat black is perfect. I did all my trim but snadblasted it first. Seems to be holding up fine.
