Schematic for factory 911 radio system from late 80s?
Anyone have a schematic or know how the system is set up?
This is for a Bpkt Reno radio. Looks like there is an amp under the seat, too. The radio has 4 speaker outputs on the back, and a round "preamp" output. What is confusing is the preamp output on the back of the radio is covered with a plug and seems like it was never used. Can anyone describe how this is supposed to be set up? |

Brian,
I just bought a used one and I think the instructions are in the box. I will scan a copy when I get home if you still need it. Michael

Thanks - I have the Reno owner's manual, but it doesn't really help!
It just shows what all the outputs on the radio are - not how it it actually configured in the car. |

Brian,
You might visit the Continental Imports site. They have some technical info on Blaupunk products. I also had Reno in my 89 Targa. They don't have that schematic but the Lexington here has the same hookup it looks like. And this link should be similar to your amp. Towards solving your issue, if your car had the "Hi Fi" option the box under your passenger seat should indeed be a small amp (4x20W IIRC) and the round cable should go to it. (The link has the pins.) Then the speakers hook to the amp (duh). I goofed around with hooking a new head unit to this amp, fabricating a connector, etc., and it sort-of worked but I finally just also put a new amp in the old location. Perhaps the factory didn't wire your system correctly. |

Thanks - I figured it out by looking at the factory wiring harness and the Bentley schematic. As it turns out, the car came stock with the Reno radio, but no amp. The amp under the seat was an aftermarket Soundstream amp, hooked to an aftermarket receiver.
So I pulled out the amp and the assorted wiring, wired up the Reno using the factory wiring, and figured out what speaker wires to to what speakers. Only problem is, the ends of the speaker wires (the part that plugs into the back of the receiver) are gone. I need to get those ends. On your Lexington link (thanks!) I think they are referred to as "2 pin DIN" connections. Any idea where I can get those? Radio Shack just gives me a blank look when I ask. I'll try Midwest Electronics on Monday. Once I get those connectors, it'll be a simple matter of grafting them on and plugging in! |

DIN 2 connectors
I believe these are the connectors that you are looking for.
![]() Check with Crutchfield and SW Stereo. Crutchfield had a kit to install an after market radio into a 911 without destroying the original harness. I still have the kit that they sent me when I replaced the radio for my 74 911, but the PO had already butcher up the wiring harness.[ |
