question about an ebay early 911 with 3.2
Hi,
Not sure if pelicans saw this car on ebay: I'm watching to see how this auction turns out as I have something similar to sell and may put it on ebay... Anyway, description says it is a "1971 PORSCHE 911T TARGA / CARRERA 3.2 ENGINE" and that "Engine is a 1985 3.2L Carrera unit with Weber 40mm Carburetors and K&N filters" Later the description says "The transmission is the G50 5-speed manual that came with the 3.2 liter engine" Looking at the picture of the engine, isn't the upper fan pulley from an early car? I guess the key would be to get the engine number. Also it appears the car has an early tach in the dash...seems like that wouldn't work with a 3.2 motor would it? The engine harness at the rear left looks in tact, seems like with a 3.2 conversion one would have to open it up to make some changes or bypass it altogether. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1105542781.jpg Bid is at 10K, 5 hours to go. If it goes for more I think I'll list my car and see what happens. |
I have a '73.5 T with a 3.2 and the original tach. Works fine.
Can't tell what engine that is, however. Hey, wait a minute- The '85 didn't come with a G-50. That's still a 915 car. The seller obviously doesn't have all of the facts straight. |
...glad to see they cleaned up the engine for the photos...seller is obviously a marketing executive..

That's is not a 3.2L. And the G50 did not start intil 87.

This came up in another thread where some thought it might be a 3.2. At best it is a mix of parts. The fan housing decal looks 3.0 or older to me.

very suspicious car, a G50 does not fit in an early car, the torsoin tube wouls have to be replaces or it would have to a ba custom short belhousing G50, very rare.
I have looked into converting my 3.2 over to webers, and it is a big job, Dist will not work, ign will not work, so you either again find a rare dist that rotates the correct way or tear the motor apart and replace the gear on the crank. Only way I figure that is a 3.2 is if it started out as a 3.0 he refers to a clutch cable, and G50 did not have them, they were hydraulic clutchs, someone with better eyes or resolution could look at the firing order to see which way it goes. and just how do you get "The carbs have gas stains along the outside of them." clearly not from a well running car. just some red flags off the top of my head. |
You will not be able to tell from those pictures. Remeber that all the top ancilarries are swappable from the early to 3.2 motors. Looks like someone made a sleeper by installing the original 2.2 fan/shroud/carbs etc to a later engine. The oil pressure sender is not a 2.2 but you would need engine type/number to verify.
Nice looking car. I bet its really fun to drive. |
Here's the other thread, I missed it the first time around:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/200765-interesting-car-but.html I should know you guys don't miss these things. |
one nore thing, 1985 was a 915 car not a G50, the soruce of the drive train is claimed to be from a 1985

now see that is a motor I would trust to be what cvfncrew says it is, it has loving care written all over it. what year of distributor do you have? I have a 3.2 I have considered doing this to, but I never seem to get a straight answer to the dist question.
