Removing o/e steering wheel

Before I break something, "my usual way", how do you remove the center pad in an 87 Carrera.......I have another wheel coming.

Grab the pad in two hands and pull. The will be a small wire for the horn attached to the pad. Disconnect after the pad comes off.

OK, thanks Kurt, I didn't feel asny screws on the back so I'll give it a yank. Can't be as bad as the time I bashed myself in the chin yanking a BMW shift lever off...boy that hurt, fortunately no one was watching.

27MM nut holding the wheel once once you remove the horn pad as Kurt suggested. Unlock the steering column before trying to undo the nut so as to not break the ignition lock.

you'll also want to center the wheels and mark the steering column before pulling off the wheel. makes centering the new wheel much easier. ask me how I know...

IIRC, torque to put it back is 36 ft lbs
