up-then down windows????
Ive searched the threads, but dont know. My windows, 86 911, work now and then. The fuse seems ok, Ive changed relays, and the switches work fine, or at least they work and feel right. I start it up, they dont work, drive some distance, they might work. Last week they worked after I took off the tint, and so I left them down, now its cold and I cant get them up. The wiring is connected, and also my mirror switch does'nt work. Any thoughts on this crazy thing.

Windows sometimes get stuck in the tracks. Have you greased them recently? Try pulling the door apart and taking a look at the sliders. Chances are that the original grease has congealed, and the cold weather turns the stock grease into a substance not unlike peanut-butter. It may be of some value to clean the runners real good, then regrease them -- something like an engine assembly lube, or a silicon-based grease, or something.

Ill try that tomorrow, but wouldnt the window motor make a sound like its running? I dont hear a thing.

SWITCHES! You can pull them apart and two little springs pop out and then two metal butterflies, clean the round studs ( contacts ) in the back of the inside of the switch. You can glue some emory paper to the eraser of a pencil and turn the pencil to sand them clean. I have had to do this on three 911's.
do drivers side switches first - then test and move on to passanger MARK YOUR WIRES!!! IF YOU REMOVE THEM !!! OR It could be the wiring plug for that door. look behind the kick panel where the left foot of the driver would be just by the door opening, behind that there is a plug where you can unplug the wiring if you wanted to remove the door. Well this plug may be loose and that would cause your windows/mirrors to come and go. Thanks Todd |
When my windows stuck, the window motor made no sound, and the windows didn't move. Just a data point...

try holding a window switch with the ignition on and open your door at the same time. I had trouble with the wires in the wire loom between the door and the body wearing out and had to replace them. too many flexes of the door over the years actually caused the wires to weaken and cause an intermittent contact in the harness itself...
|
My windows occasionally stop working. I pull the switches from the door, and pull/reatach wires. Seems to work, at least every time I have tried.
Hope this helps Alan |
I wouldn't disagree with any of the above possibilities, but don't overlook the fuse(s) themselves; I've encountered fuses that look good from the outside but they were not making consistently good contact, thereby resulting in intermittent problems with the component attached to that particular fuse. IF you don't find the problem otherwise, try replacing the associated fuse...they're cheap and it might just cure the problem!!

Well today, I was working on the problem. I checked the wiring, fuses, etc, but still no luck. While in the garage, I had the turbo heater on whick makes a good noise. My passenger side window was half way down, wouldnt work. When I was doing something???, the window went up. The only problem was I didnt hear it go up, and I dont know when it happened. GRRRRRRRRRRRR. When I checked the pass. side switch, it did make a clicking sound, but wouldnt go up or down. I ordered a new 3 prong fuse block from Mid America today, so Ill see if that helps. I got a loose fuse holder, # 2 from the back, but it says that does'nt control the winders. Oh well, its cold and snowy outside so I cant drive it.

Ok now Im really confused. Here's the story. I checked all fuses and replaced the fuse block{3} with a new one. I cant and could'nt get any power to the last fuse, the window fuse, according to the fuse cover. I tested with a tester, and no power. I checked the back of the block and all looked ok. The relays are ok too. I get power to # 2 and 3 in that block, which is the closest to the rear of the whole panel. So I took the wire, red/blue off the bottom and attached it to the number 2 fuse, and the drivers window went up without me touching the door button. But then, I looked over and the passenger side window is now DOWN. The window that was up is now down, and the down is now up. What the ######. Any thoughts on this crazy [to me} problem. Thanks

Sorry about the difficulties. Just to convey my experience on my '88, I chased a similar intermittent problem. I had power as appropriate at the motor and when I had the motor out it spun fine. This led me to chase window track issues...allignment, lubrication, etc. This got me a lot of practice taking the door apart. I finally gave up and replaced the motor and all has been well. Could the motor just become weak? I dunno.... Ken

Three window switches on the 911.
The driver has two on his side. If the passenger switch on the driver's side fails, the passenger side window can fail even at the passenger switch. Not sure about how or why the wiring is done this way, I just know if my passenger window fails, and neither switch movement makes the passenger window move, the driver's side passenger switch is bad. I keep two switches on hand just in case. They are only $18.00 each. Depending on which window is intermittent, I would replace the drivers switch first, then the driver's passenger switch, the finally, the passenger's side passenger swtich. ***Mark your wires CAREFULLY! *** Any discreprency in the wiring can cause both windows to stop working. Have fun! Good luck. |
Well, the windows do go up and down without a problem, its just WHEN they go up and down. Im still trying to figure out why there is no juice to the number 1 fuse.
|
maybe it goes to ground through the fuse. so there's no voltage at the fuse terminal until a switch is thrown. I believe the headlights in my car were originally wired that way before I figured out how to install the relays. it went hot to switch through the fuse in the hood panel through the bulb filament to ground in that case. so the fuse was only hot when the headlight switch was on....

OH!
I guess I missed this issue in your original post.... I see you have a Carrera. The Carrera's turn off the power to the windows when the DOOR IS OPENED! (Or the little switch in the door grounds), if this switch is intermittent than your window power will be intermittent. SmileWavy When checking the windows for power, be sure the key is in the IGNITION ON, position (not accessories). IIRC - the windows should work all the time with the key in this position, no matter the door is open or not. Good luck. |
I have a related question. My driver's side window is a little sticky. Do I really need to grease the channel the window slides in?
|
Probably. I noticed, my windows go slower in the winter time, than the summer time. *shrug*
Mine are clean and greased. Or at least they were last winter. :D |
Ive sat in the car, key "on" to ingnition, with no luck. The door has been opened all this time, I didnt check them with the door closed. I will tonight. Also, on the fuse box, I have a copper or brass "crossover" type of thing that fits into where the screws go behind the wires. There is one going from #4 fuse to #3 fuse, and then one from #3 to #2, but none from #2 to#1. It would seem to me that this is some sore of power strip for juice, is it not. Thanks for all replys, and Ill keep going until the end.
