tranny prob after going off track 78SC
I went off track yesterday and hit a mound of dirt going around 70 mph. Dirt flew over the car and caked the bottom of it. Not much visible damage, but the tranny is not grabbing the gears, especially 3rd gear and reverse.
I'm going under today to clean it and then I will try to adjust the shifting linkage. Any ideas what happened to the tranny?

Is the clutch properly operating? Does it fully release so you can put it in reverse and other without reverse gear clash or syncro balk? The clutch arm, cable, etc is a low point and subject to getting caked in this situation.
Has the shift lever moved position? Does the throttle operate properly? Best, Grady

Everything works fine, but the clutch feels light and 3rd gear won't stay in place. Perhaps the caking in the underneath clutch area is causing the problem. The car just now got jacked up to the point where I can go under and clean. I'll report back in a few minutes between cleaning and watching the football game.

It's the 'Book of Knowledge' and it helps me understand my car.
It's cleaned out, but 3rd gear has way too much slop. What should I check?

If car was in third when you hit "the problem" you may have "readjusted" the shift rod coupler. Search for shifter adjustment threads.

Yup, it was just an adjustment and problem solved. How did the hit in 3rd gear cause the mis-adjustment?

The enine was dragged rearwards in the chasis, the shift lever was pulled to the very front edge of the shifter assembly - until it reached the limit, the engine and transmission continued towards the rear of the car, dragged by the mud....then the main shift rod, in tension, relieved the excess load by slipping the coupler....
You still might have some minor internal distress, or reduced life on the 3rd gear drive teeth. Regards Hayden |
