Lots of people are interested in saving $245 -- assuming a couple of bucks for the cost of the grease.

You cannot properly inspect, clean, and regrease unless they are apart.

If they are throw away parts (you know you'll replace them soon anyway) then perhaps just shooting some grease in there is okay.

On the later Carrera axles, you cannot take them fully apart. The joint is pressed onto the axle. On the pre Carrera axles you can remove both CVs and take them apart. At least it was that way on the 88 I did a few months ago. Did I miss something?

Of course you do that with the inner CV, but on the G50 cars, the outer CV is fixed on the half axle, and at least to my knowledge, can't be taken apart...so, ya clean it out the best you can (I got mine totally clean, and all 4 CVs looked like new). Why pay for new/rebuilt ones just for a split boot (as was my situation too)...

i have carrera axles on my g50 conversion. i imerse them in a bucket of diesel and aggitate until clean. final clean with some brake clean then repacked joints.

I am in the middle of this myself.....wow, can you say messy!

I noticed the torn boot when doing routine gear oil change and took the axle off. I used a spray can of parts cleaner/brake cleaner and was able to remove 100% of the grease to inspect for wear. While I did not intend it, the balls did come out creating a challance to reasemble but I now have a much better idea of how these darn things work.

Also, since one was torn, I assmued the other 3 were ready to go so I pulled the other side. I re-packed them with a semi-synthetic grease.
