fitting SC alternator in early car
guys;
the car is a '69E. it was already fitted with an internally regulated Paris-Rhone and i don't recall this being an issue. that unit is no longer available to me. onward... the replacement works fine BUT it is longer than the other unit such that the 2 pullies are no longer in plane. i presume my options are; 1) upgrade to a later housing or; 2) mill the existing housing to fit. if (1) which years do the trick and are there any other considerations ? if (2) then does anyone know the exact amount of material to remove ? any other options ? thanks all. cheers jerry... starting to chomp at the bit. |

Jerry,
The 1975 and later housings were machined 9.3 mm deeper to accept the 980 Watt alternator's case. The replacement doesn't have to be a Valeo or Paris-Rhone -- the more reliable Marchal/Motorola 980 Watt with separate regulator works, too, and is a better choice!

When we play 911 Trivia, I want to be on Warren's team.

count me in! this isn't the first time Warren has come to my rescue. the tip re: outboard regulators is well taken and not the first time i've heard it mentioed. one more piece of trivia ? my understanding is that there is some difference between the units mentioned above and the Bosch units. can "someone" outline that difference from the standpoint of interchangability ? ;-)
thanks again! best jerry
