Engine Holding Fixture P201

Is there a market for a used Engine Holding Fixture P201? I'm looking to buy one, but have no idea if any used ones are for sale or whee to look. I know Wayne sells them new, but how about all you guys who might have used one for sale?

I think I'd like to have only the "official" P201, as I've used a jury-rigged one (universal), and it's not so satisfying (nor do I feel it is as secure as the P201 must be).

If you find 2, I''l take the second one.

I'll throw in the obligatory "they pop up on eBay occasionally" because it's true.

A few years back I followed an auction that eventually went out of control. Sometimes tools like these sell for close to new price because there's not really anything wrong with the tool being used?

I think you could sell it quickly here on the classifieds. Provided you are willing to part with it for say half to two thirds of its list price. I know I would buy it for that.

I know that eBay sometimes has them, but I don't have either the patience or the luxury of checking with eBay on a periodic basis. That's why I asked.

Anyway, I guess the other way is to put up a Wanted ad in our own PelicanParts Classifieds. My personal credo is that used parts are worth only 50% or less. Otherwise, I'm willing to pay full price for new items, knowing that I'm the only who had "used" that items. (Same with cars cars, unless I know who the seller is).

dweymer 01-19-2005 08:37 AM

Andras, I posted a WTB for that and had no luck, now I'm just diverting parts budget to buy a new one.

Edit: Would you be interested in renting one, if so; for how long and how much would you be willing to pay?

Hi Don,

I have another freind who has three of the universal kind, and I suppose I could always borrow one of them. He doesn't really ever have three engines going on at once.

But I had my engine on one of his universals, and that's where I was Nervous Nelly until I finished it, and got it back in my car. I have found that the proper tool for the job makes it SOOOOOOO much easier and safer.

I must have the same standards as you - I'd rather buy new (saving for it) than accept used, unknown quality.

Have two 201's and 2 313 mounts. Also, four wheeled cart whcih will hold two engines. Each setup (1 mount + 1 holder) is $275.00. Not negotiable.

dweymer 01-19-2005 08:59 AM

From the lack of wts ads for these it would seem they are collector items.

dweymer 01-19-2005 12:58 PM

Violin, how much for just one p201, as I don't need the mount.

john_colasante 01-19-2005 01:05 PM

You might as well buy it new, because the used price is usually very close to the new price as far as I've seen.

Andras Nagy 01-19-2005 01:09 PM

Then why would anyone expect to get a "new" price for an "used" item?

Are sellers being greedy towards their own Porsche breathern? Are the "haves" "eating their young"?

What is this world coming to? I have never sold any used item for more than 1/2 the new price, mostly even less. It is, after all, used. Or is this the American Way?

dweymer 01-19-2005 01:22 PM

I think it is part due to the fact that we can store such a small item easily, and it is hard to let go of tools that you "might need again"; at least that's my take on it.

jbell959 01-31-2005 05:37 PM

violin959 - I'm interested in a set. Please PM me or send me an email.

Doug Steinel 01-31-2005 06:55 PM

Some things are just as good after being used so will command very close to the new price. That P201 is just such a thing. Does anyone think it is degraded by using it to rebuild an engine?

Oldporsche 01-31-2005 07:00 PM

I too use the 50% rule. If its used, 50% or less. This however does not apply to speciality shop tools. Porsche or Chevrolet. If these items are used in the home shop, they are rarely used at all, and rarely abused.

I have a several Porsche shop tools including the aforementioned engine/transmission holder. If I were to sell it, since it is used rarely and has a resale value, it would be close to new price.

I bought one new. I don't ever expect to part with it. My engine has been on it for close to 6 months. Why? Getting the engine done is just not a priority. The Minnesota driving season is too short, it's too cold even in a heated garage and I have the SC to drive in the summer. So if someone decides to rent/loan theirs out be forewarned yer lessee/ buddy might have it longer than you think. I'd take a deposit equal to the replacement cost. That's how rental companies work (read get their equipment back).
I've also seen them on EBAY, very close to the costs of a new one. May not seem fair but what is?

dweymer 02-04-2005 11:28 AM

Agreed Mike, am saving my pennies now; so I should have one by...well sometime.
