Valve adjust hours?
 

Hey guys,
I am comtemplating having an independent Porsche mechanic perform a valve adjust on an 87 Carrera. How many hours would be appropriate for this job?

I just called a local Porsche mechanic on this and was quoted 3-3.5 hours, $350-$400.

I would estimate from an experienced shop, you'll be charged about 3 hours.

This accounts for car prep and leaving the car overnight as engine must be stone cold prior to adjusting valves.

Put on lift
Drain oil
Remove rear tires
Remove Valve covers
unbolt A/C compressor
Remove blower hose
Adjust valves and check studs and rocker arm shafts.
Put valve covers back on and torque them to spec.
Reinstall A/C Compressor
Reinstall Blower hose
Put rear tires back on and torque lug nuts
Fill oil level
Test drive
prepare invoice.

Parts:
Valve cover kit: Approx: $19.00
Oil, Approx, 3 quarts if fresh or 11 quarts for a full change
Oil filter (if full oil change is warranted)

i do 2.5hrs.

Just had it done by European Performance in Raleigh, NC. 2.5 hrs included valve adjustment, cap, rotor and air filter.

no oil and filter?

Oil yes (3 qts), filter no (I had just changed oil and filter), also valve cover gasket set. Total for parts and labor was just over $350. Hellava deal, I thought.

What surprises me is that when I had a '78 911SC in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '90's, it was about the same price. Back then a 10K service was about $450 (import shop), $600(Porsche specialty shop) or $1100 (Dealer). It seems inflation hasn't had much of an effect.

Nine9six, I always took the SC to a guy named Red McClintock in Berkeley (Porsche specialty shop). He could tune that baby up like no one else. If he is still in business, I would recommend him. I spent a lot of time talking to him, and he knew more about Porsches than any factory mechanic I ever met. He might run "The Auto Doctor" in Berkeley, although that is just a guess. Good luck.

Whats the average for a 930?

3.5 if it's stripped down, 4.5 if all the smog crap is still there. plus oil, filter and VC kit. good idea to do the plugs while it's all opened up. it's approching tuneup territory at this point, so might as well complete it with cap, rotor, filters, belts and set the timing and CO for another hour or so.
