Key questions
First I have searched to the point of confusion so maybe someone can help clear things up.
When I got my '84, I received 4 keys, 3 are black the other is in the old lighted holder. 2 keys work the doors and the other 2 keys work the ignition. The lighted key happens to be a door key and also looks to be the most used with the other 3 showing about the same wear. I guess I don't have a master. Also the "cut" of the door keys is significantly different from the ignition keys. Does this mean that at sometime the ignition switch was replaced and that's why no master? Also I have the factory alarm but like usual no key. Can anyone tell me the easiest and or most cost effective way to get set up with a master and to get a functional alarm lock/key. The alarm key/lock is one of two remaining items that I need to resolve before I can say that everything on the car works. And that is my quest!!!!! Ralph |
I'M INTERESTED in an alarm key as well. I think you have to replace everything.

You could rebuild your door locks to match your existing ignition key, but I don't know what can be done about the alarm

I have been trying to get a set of "factory cut" keys from CHANMPION PORSCHE (Pompano Beach FL) I am now on my 5 th trip to the dealership $150 for 2 o/e lighted head keys but I still don't have any.
Most of the parts people do not even want to deal with the keys on the older cars (87 Targa). When I call to see if anything has been resolved they just leave me hanging on the phone till I tire of it and hang up I hope that their sales and service are better thaN their parts department...A DISASTER. As far as the alarm key I have been told to forget it. Actually an alarm is probably a waste, what you really need is to disable the car when you leave it. |

The alarm key can be fixed one of two ways:
Easy and costs more: buy a new cylinder with two keys from Porsche. Cost is ~ $75-90 Less expensive but more work: take the old cylinder out of the door and bring it to a locksmith who will create a new key. The trick here is finding a locksmith who has the proper blank. You can also find blanks on ebay if the locksmith can/will use your key(our host may have them as well). Cost: $25-45 I went with easy and ordered a new cylinder. Simple to remove door panel and R&R. |
