looking to buy a 993, need advice
I've been looking at 993's and I found two that I really like. The first is a 97 with 38,000 miles, blue/tan, 6 speed, original paint with some stone chips etc... The car is in excellent original condition and only needs tires. If I buy it I would want to lower it and change the wheels and mufflers.
The other one is a 95 with almost the same mileage, silver/blue and is just as nice but it already has the mod's that I would do to the blue one. The cars the same price. Should I buy the 97 V-ram car and dump a few thousand dollars in mods into it or should I buy the 95 and just drive it. I've heard good and bad about both cars and I just don't know which is the better car to have. 993 guys, PLEASE HELP!!! |

Which one do you like better? Would you really be happy with the blue interior?

If it were me, I'd lean towards the '97, given equal condition and price. You're already spending a bundle on the car, and a few thousand extra dollars really isn't that much in the scheme of things, to have the car you really want. I like the extra low end torque of the varioram, but to each his own. Also, you can choose your own mods (preferred shocks & springs, etc) if you buy a stock car. The obvious downside is the cash outlay, the upside is having the car exactly how you want it.
Also, the later 993's seem to have a flap/trap door to make diy oil changes relatively easy. I don't believe the 95's have it.

I say get the '97, but beware of potential CEL issues. Hmmmm, better get the '95 then. No stinking CEL issues.

How serious is the CEL issue? Is it just a matter of time until it happens or is it possible that it will never happen? |

Twenty per cent more torque at 4000 rpm, with Varioram. Buy the most recent model you can afford. No brainer to me.

Blue and tan too! My SC is blue and tan. If it wasn't clear across the country I'd get it if it passed inspection. The blue interior of the '95 isn't something I'd want either.

Since all 993's, including the 1995 models, are GREAT and reliable cars, get the one that you like best, keeping in mind service history, condition etc.
No reason to stay away from the '95's, in fact, I recommend the 1995 model soley for the SAI CEL issue. Its only a matter of time for the OBD2 cars ![]() My 1995 has the removable access panel for the oil tank drain, but I strongly recommend removing the whole rocker panel for an oil change. Not that big-o-deal, really.. Just a 10mm socket and a phillips screwdriver.. Easy.. |
