clutch cable about to go?

is there a way to inspect the cable without removing it? my cable on my '74 is 2-3 years old and car is driven daily. normally, i have to make minor adjustments on it maybe every 6 months. for the past couple, i've been having to do it weekly and now every several days. i don't have the original locking nut it must have come with, but rather use two nuts simply butted against each other to hold it. i don't believe that these are slipping though. any thoughts? thanks.

If you have to make adjustments daily or weekly for that matter, sounds like something is loosening. The cable itself should not stretch within the cover, although I guess the cover itself could. I'd start at the clutch pedal and work my way back. See if the pedal cluster is in order and that the lever arm is not wallowing out. Mine completely broke through. Check that the nut on the clutch cable that attaches to the pedal arm is tight. It's feasible it could be backing out since it threads in and is secured with a locking nut near the accelerator pedal.

Also, look for frayed clutch cable at that point. Underneath, see if the clutch cable sleeve is still inserted into the tub. It should fit tightly and not be moving in and out. Then check at the helper spring for any frayed cable. I would do an inspection and probably just replace the entire cable and at the same time put the correct locking nuts on. The cable is only about $28.

You could probably do the replacement in the time it takes to adjust the cable over a couple days.

autobonrun,
thanks. like i said, i no longer have the original locking nut, but i think my 'double nut' system doesn't back out. good idea about checking at the tub...i'll try that. i think my pedal cluster is okay. i just wondered if the increasing frequency of adjustment occured just before breakage for others...
