need help to identify this part?

Can anybody tell me what this thing is behind the dipstick? It has a vacuum advance type tube going to it on the front, but nothing attached to the port on the other side (back).

I'm wondering if I can remove it completely for a track car?

I think it's the activated carbon container (tank ventilation).

Kees.

It is. I would leave it on track or no. You 'll have to completely replumb the whole fuel vent system if you remove it. And the car will fail smog if it is licensed for street use.

Thanks for the info!

Here is a link if you want to know more info about the carbon container (the last 4 posts are really helpful).
