Danny Schmitt

I inquired about two different turbo look cabs Schmitt has on his lot. The supposed Gemballa car has no Gemballa parts and major mileage issues they dismissed as a conversion from KM to MPH issue. That was odd cause it was a US spec car. The second they could not verify it being a true 491 car but that did not stop them from saying it was and although they say there is records with the car they could produce none.

How do these people stay in business?

Is this the guy out of St. Louis? If so, others have had problems with that dealership.

Can't answer any of the above questions, but I guess I was lucky as I didn't have any issues dealing with them...

I live fairly close to the Schmitt dealership in St. Louis and get over there occasionally. They are not really straight shooters. I would not recommend that anyone buy a car from them without seeing it (or arranging for a careful inspection). They can and do get some very nice cars in. They usually ask top dollar for these (which I think is fine for a primo car). But they also get a lot of questionable/bad cars in and tart them up for resale (as something better than they are). If, at some point, someone from far away is seriously thinking about a Schmitt car, I might be able to help with the vetting process.

The story I got about mileage was in the form of a 2 page email. Something about changing speedos and going from metric to english yadda yadda. Its a really sweet looking cab but I told the guy forget it, and stop with the stories. They addvertised it as a Gemballa car but he cold not confirm it had a single Gemballa part an too boot he bought it from a dealer for resale. Thats okay but he also claims later to know the PO personally. How do these guys do business?

I live on the other side of the region, and I mostly agree with Mr. Hoagg. I actually bought my Carrera from them, but not without a LOT of diligent research, including talking with the original owner (who I missed buying it from by a few hours) and a LOT of haggling to get the price right. If you really know what you're doingyou can get a great car there. Just not a place for a rookie to buy a Porsche. I wouldn't deal with them as an out-of-town buyer - too many other better sources. But if you want some PPI references, let us know.

BTW, Dan's dad, Charles, was a Rolls dealer, and bought and sold other exotics. He did some time for rolling odometers back.
