Can a stock 901 shift lever be used with the weltmeister ss kit?

I pulled my shifter assembly out of the car this afternoon. I did not like how short the shift lever was, and realized upon pulling it out and seeing the 1/2" adapter plate that the car has the weltmeister short shift kit. I have a nice chrome stock length lever that I'd like to use in that housing. Can I swap them or is there something preventing this?

Otherwise, I do have an entire other shift assembly I could use, but the 101 project book seems to indicate that undoing the ss install is a '3 hour job', so I'd rather not do this.

Any advice?

Bonus: digging through a buired box of stuff that came with the car, I found new weltmeister ball cup bushing and coupler bushings still in their packages.

You should compare the length from the pivot point to the ball socket of the " old" chrome (stock length I assume) to the "new" lever in the lever assembly...just to make sure the Short Shift one is longer from the pivot point down (that's why the simple spacer plate - it just makes the throw longer on the bottom and shorter on the top - by altering the pivot point).

If all you have is the chrome shift lever apart from the entire assembly, you will have to tear down the old assembly, pull the Weltmeister shift lever out, and insert your stock one.

That is really the time factor, as you have to disassemble and reassemble the entire lever assembly with the shorter lower pivot arm. Then you can swap the cup bushing onto the chrome lever, and bolt the assembly up - Note: without the spacer!

If your 911 T is like mine, you may have a very early assembly (one that does not have a "tower" or vertical springs, or a pawl guide etc., and it is a lot simpler to take apart. Still, when you disassemble it you'll want to clean and lube all, and check the springs and internals. The Haynes manual shows all three of the early assembly's that I have seen.

Wayne's book shows the bushing R&R on the later housing with the "tower" so if you have that type it will take quite a while to do it, but it is not rocket science.

Here is some free advise, because you will probably need that $5 and more to fix your gearbox if you leave that weltmeister in. Here is the correct fix. Remove weltmeister, find trash receptacle, discard appropriately.

excellent. I actually have two complete shift assemblies, one with the welmeister shorter lever and another complete tower/lever albeit with a repositioned-to-be-closer-to-the-driver lever.

The nice chrome unmolested lever is bare. You can see why this is the one I want to use. I suppose I will just reinstall the Weltmeister one for now, and the other assembly for surgery, and then sell the ss kit to someone who wants it.

(and thanks for the explanation - this makes perfect sense & I should have realized this, I just wasn't sure if perhaps something else in the tower was modified aside from the lever)
